Great news for the US's AI industry is that the governor of California vetoed a poor attempt to fashion an AI regulation.  The AI space will revolutionize how work gets done for decades and is also a key strategic weapon in our global competition with China.  Any regulation cemented now will be obsolete within months.  In addition, this specific bill would have stopped companies from releasing AI models "if there is an unreasonable risk" that they "will cause or materially enable a critical harm." This language is vague so any regulator or court would have to guess at intent years from now which would have inhibited innovation and slowed down economic growth.  We have laws in the books that prohibit unlawful behavior - let's enforce those laws and let our AI innovators innovate. https://lnkd.in/gFSJ_XZv

For my latest story in WIRED I dove into the (unsexy) world of enterprise AI apps, a group of startups that are either pivoting their business model from consumer AI to enterprise AI, or that have launched with that intent from the start. A few things I learned from reporting this out: -Charging big businesses per seat or per employee for software is a well-worn model, but with generative AI, companies have to take into account the cost of "tokens", or units of data processed by AI models -OpenAI has grown its enterprise sales and go-to-market team *significantly* over the past 18 months; that team of employees is now 1/5th of the company. -A lot of entrepreneurs, like Clay Bavor of Sierra and Keith Peiris of Tome, think AI software that has a very narrow focus is more compelling right now than broad & wide AI apps -And, most obviously, AI errors could be seriously consequential if the software is being used in healthcare, manufacturing, security, etc. “It’s one thing for ChatGPT or Midjourney to get 'creative' for an end user. It’s quite another thing for AI to get creative in the context of business applications.”

Very interesting and I fully support the bills. Key takeaway: 1. Stringent requirements for developers of large AI models, mandating them to assess risks and ensure accountability for any harmful actions taken by their AI systems. 2. Growing concerns about the potential dangers of advanced AI technologies, such as the misuse of generative AI and deepfakes, especially in sensitive areas like elections and entertainment. My feedback: 1. You have the law, you need to enforce it. 2. We need to have a systems that assist in the enforcement of this law 3. It shall be mandatory for all AI systems to be assessed before release to the public for use or sell. Additionally, if you need your AI to be assessed, do contact us for detail. #LLMs are ubiquitous, but, as Meta's Chief AI Scientist Yann LeCun noted in a podcast I recently listened to, they are a dead branch of #AI research. Why? Because there seems to be no way of solving their hallucination and bone-headed error problems. Because they have already been trained with all readily available data. Because they don't reason nor understand : they just spit out what they have learned. Because the larger the models get, the more compute resources they need.
