However, amidst the celebration, we must also confront the harmful stereotype of the “Model Minority.”   The “Model Minority” Myth: The “Model Minority” myth portrays people of Asian descent as uniformly successful, hardworking, and academically accomplished. While it may seem like a compliment, this stereotype oversimplifies the diverse experiences within the AAPI community. It erases struggles, perpetuates harmful expectations, and ignores different individuals' unique challenges.   Challenging Stereotypes: Let’s break free from these limiting narratives! By acknowledging the complexities of AAPI lives, we can challenge stereotypes and create a more inclusive society. Here’s how: Amplify Diverse Voices: Highlight the stories of AAPI individuals who defy stereotypes. They share not only their achievements but also their vulnerabilities, resilience, and multifaceted identities. Educate Ourselves: Learn about the rich histories and cultural nuances of AAPI communities. Understand that success stories don’t represent everyone’s reality. Advocate for Equity: Advocate for policies that address systemic inequalities faced by AAPI individuals. Not all AAPI experiences align with the “Model Minority” myth.   Creating a Culture of Belonging: Let’s foster a culture where everyone feels seen, valued, and heard: Celebrate Intersectionality: AAPI identities intersect with race, ethnicity, gender, sexuality, and more. Acknowledge these intersections and honor the diversity within the community. Listen Actively: Engage in conversations with empathy. Way back in 1954, Walt Disney used the term "edutainment" as a way to describe content intended to teach but which also has incremental entertainment value. Mr. Rogers Neighborhood and Sesame Street have been two excellent historical examples. Now, as video content continues to dominate social media, we're seeing more and more of it. Building edutainment into your social media strategy is increasingly essential for several reasons. It provides higher levels of engagement, it is more likely to be shared, it boosts brand recall, and it establishes you as a trustworthy authority in your field. Is the Juice Worth the Squeeze? This thought-provoking phrase, shared by Founder Carly O'Brien during our Carolina Women+ in Tech™ board meeting today, struck a chord with me. It reminded me of a workshop where a horse successfully navigated an obstacle, illustrating a powerful metaphor. In this analogy, the horse represented the team's customers, while the obstacle symbolized their five-year vision for the future. The horse was at liberty—untethered—but with three people waving around it, how free was it really? Similarly, while customers may appear untethered, clever marketing algorithms can quickly hijack their decision-making processes, already stressed by daily life. The horse complied, but if you looked closely at its face, you could see its reluctance to be coaxed in a certain direction. This brings us back to the question: Is the juice worth the squeeze? While the short-term effects of our strategies may be positive—securing sales, boosting revenue, hitting targets, influecing thoughts, and gaining promotions—are we truly doing right by our customers and society in the long run? Fortunately, tides are shifting. We are becoming more aware of the impact of our actions and strategies. It’s inspiring to be surrounded by big thinkers like Carly, who founded Women in Tech to genuinely support women in the tech field without any ulterior motives, and innovators like Garrett Stern and Sarah Waylett from Center for Innovative Leadership at Furman University, who are dedicated to fostering human-centered problem-solving all across the board. The future is bright. Regardless of the US presidential election outcome tomorrow, the collaborative work we do is, across country, party and candidate lines, is what will truly drive progress toward a better future. Change starts at the grassroots level, and it’s the boots on the ground that make the world spin. Happy Election Day!
