Finding Common Ground on Election Day… 🟦 + 🟥 = 🗽 I’m incredibly grateful for the opportunity to talk with Tania Israel for this latest episode of Storylinking. Our conversation touched on the very real tensions so many of us feel with our communities—balancing optimism and overwhelm, finding our own path while making space to connect with others. And it seems like a lot of those tensions are peaking in this moment. Today’s a big day here in the U.S. 🇺🇸 And while I consider myself an optimist, I still feel the weight of uncertainty and anxiety. One part of that is based on the specific outcome of our elections. But for me an equal part stems from how very divided our country often feels right now. I don’t know exactly what the coming days, weeks, or months will hold. But I do know this: our future will absolutely rely on community builders. Leaders like you who can step forward, reach out, build relationships across divides, and bring us all back together. If that sounds like a lot right now, I agree. The good news is there are steps we can take right now toward a more connected and hopeful future. Here are just a few of Dr. Israel’s insights on navigating division: ➡️ Reduce your polarizing input: Be mindful of media and discussions that amplify division. ➡️ Lean into your curiosity: Approach tough topics with openness, especially when perspectives differ. ➡️ Use storytelling to foster connection: Stories humanize others and create shared understanding, building relationships and developing empathy across divides. ➡️ Learn about bridging organizations: Organizations like Braver Angels play a crucial role in strengthening social cohesion and democracy. The niggling question that your ego doesn't want you to answer: Am I really the best person to grow my business? This week's Business Leader Masterclass is with Sullivan & Stanley founder Pat Lynes. For a decade, he built the boutique consulting firm into a force that has helped to transform major businesses like Tesco, WHSmith and Three.   While he always had in the back of his mind that he was looking to hire his replacement, he stood aside as CEO of the company last year. He realised the business needed to move to the next level but didn’t feel he was the right person to take it there. A difficult take considering that the business is named after his two sons.   In this Masterclass, Lynes reflects on his decision to step aside and provides lessons for the transition when the time comes. A few key points that stuck out to me: 😤 Look out for signs outside of just the balance sheet Are things annoying you more than they aren't? Self-awareness is key to this. 😏 Ego can hinder growth Overcoming your own personal ego is a crucial step in accepting that stepping aside may be the best choice for the business, even when it’s difficult to admit ❌ Work on your non-negotiables and go on "dates" Once Lynes had come to the conclusion that he needed to find a replacement, he knew that finding someone who would maintain the company's culture was one of the most important factors. Then, go on multiple "dates" with the candidates you're looking to take over the business to get to know them. 🏋️ Prepare the foundation before the transition Effective leadership transition involves long-term planning. Lynes laid the groundwork by fostering a strong company culture, engaging with potential candidates over time, and ensuring a smooth handover process, including hiring a transition coach for key team members. 🤝 Lean on a coach Lynes describes himself as a "product of coaching", with both a life and business coach. Having a sounding board to flesh out his ideas and feelings made the transition considerably smoother. He also got a transition coach for the incoming CEO and select senior people in the business. 🤚 Know when to step back To avoid undermining the new leadership, Lynes removed himself from the senior leadership team entirely. This signalled to the organisation that the new CEO was fully in charge, preventing any perception of him being a "puppet CEO". Have you been through this situation?
