Keep only what you absolutely need. Nothing more, maybe less. Think three pairs of shoes, four makeup products, and hand-me-down everything. This is “underconsumption core,” the TikTok trend of the summer. Those whose videos fall under the hashtag might initially be singled out as “cheap,” as they proudly share their ancient cookware inventory (one single, stained pot) and the cracked makeup mirror they found on the street seven years ago. When one of these videos follows a TikTok ad for five-dollar plastic hair curlers, viewers are left confused, and understandably so. In an age of rampant overconsumption, this trend has reignited discourse on ethical living and consumerism. Younger generations are sticking to the products they know and love– dependable, comfortable, sustainable. But what does this focus on underconsumption mean for brands? It means the creation of long-lasting, quality products. Brands that produce less might just gain more. Millennials and Gen Z have shown us what they want. Now, it’s time for brands to tap into this mindset, even if it means parting ways with the status quo.

Over the last year, FULLBEAUTY Brands has quietly been building a #plussize fashion empire. In early 2023, the 120-year-old company owned 12 plus- and inclusive-size brands including Swimsuits For All and Roaman’s, which it had acquired over the decades. But in the last 12 months, it has added to its portfolio three #DTC and digitally-native plus-size brands, including CUUP , the formerly Walmart-owned ELOQUII and, most recently, Dia & Co.
