National Grid customers across New York City will face higher gas bills. As of Sept. 1, customers who use the utility's gas to heat their properties will, on average, see an additional $30 charged to their monthly bills in Brooklyn, parts of Queens, and Staten Island. This rate hike was approved by state regulators last month, primarily to fund $5 billion in new investments that National Grid plans to make into New York’s gas system. Reasons Con Edison Customers Might Be Paying More for Natural Gas than National Grid Customers: Different Supply Contracts: Utilities like Con Edison and National Grid often enter into different long-term contracts for natural gas supply. If Con Edison secured contracts during a period of high prices, these costs would likely be passed on to their customers. Infrastructure Costs: Con Edison may face higher infrastructure costs related to the maintenance and upgrading of pipelines and delivery systems, especially given the dense urban environment of New York City. These additional costs can be reflected in customer bills. Customer Base and Usage Patterns: Differences in the customer base and average usage patterns can influence the pricing strategies of utilities. For example, if Con Edison serves a more diverse customer base or a larger number of commercial entities, this could impact how costs are distributed.
