Connextra format for user stories isn’t bad because of the syntax or because it’s awkward conversationally. It can become bad because the rigid formality of it implies just another form of written requirement to be handed off and walked away from by its original author. Written requirements do not work as well as we so desperately want them to. Stories, whether its user stores or your grandpa’s war stories, are meant to be TOLD and discussed, not read and consumed. #userstory #userstories #productbacklog, #backlogrefinement

If you're wondering how to measure how successful your Scrum implementation is in your team, there are two things you can do. ⭐ Look at the team satisfaction and the stakeholder satisfaction. How? Feedback. Gather feedback from your team to gauge their morale. Use 1:1s and retrospectives. Gather input from stakeholders to ensure they get what they expect.

Are you using Scrum? But you don’t feel that it's providing any benefit? You can't escape that feeling, that little niggle scratching away at you, that Scrum isn't working for you, the team or the company. How do you know when it's time to make that switch from Scrum to Kanban? Well, you have to look for the signs. But first, have you heard of the Dead Horse Theory? It goes something like this, ‘When you discover that you're riding a dead horse the best strategy is to dismount’. Pretty sound logic eh. But in business this rarely happens, we never seem to get off our dead horse. Instead we try and come up with a range of more ‘advanced’ tactics such as; - Buying a bigger whip - Changing rider - Appointing a committee to study the horse - Lowering standards to include dead horses - Providing additional training to improve the horse's performance - Or my personal favourite, it always worked before so why change The list of things we try is endless other than actually getting off the dead horse and onto one that is actually alive. Ok, a dead horse might be a more visual clue to a problem than we actually get in the real world. So how do we tell if Scrum has become our dead horse and it's time to switch to Kanban? Well, in my experience there are 14 signs that it’s time to make that switch. 1. Access to customers. You know that you're supposed to be working with the customer in order to develop and problem solve with them, but they are conspicuous by their absence. You only ever get to deal with middlemen or women, proxies, who can never actually answer your questions. The customer is central to solving a problem, without their direct involvement and input you're just guessing at what they may or may not want. 2. Product Owners are simply gathering requirements rather than trying to solve problems. Let me explain. The clue is in the name, Product Owner, they own the product. The PO should have a full and deep understanding of the product, be close to the customer and understand their needs, know the market the competition, and have a vision of where to take the product. They should be solving customer problems and needs, not creating a wish list. 3. There's a clear sign, that the focus, the pressure, is on output, get all those stories done, more is better! Rather than focusing on the outcome for the customer, you're basically a feature factory. You don't concentrate on problem solving. 💥 The takeaway here is don’t blame Scrum, you’re using the wrong framework for your context! ⚡️ Now, Kanban is NOT going to magically solve all of these issues BUT it will very likely be a better framework for your context and cause less frustration. We need to attend to quality technical practices. David Scott Bernstein and I are working on a simple path forward. You don't need to be extreme to get the results of XP. The problem when you make things optional is that people likely won't do them. When Scrum leaders decided not to say how to do technical practices it would have been useful if the detailed what objectives needed to be met. Many people who adopt Scrum do it because they are attracted to its "follow" aspect. But when you don't tell people the objectives of quality tech practices they tend not to do anything about it. The focus on Scrum has been to enable it to work anywhere - software involved or not. But the world is more and more digital. Ignoring tech practices so it can work everywhere makes it work less well in software development.
