A Sincere Question for Sales Professionals: Why is there such an overemphasis on new lead generation instead of delivering excellent service to the clients who you already work with? I represent many clients in purchasing a great deal of equipment, products and services to outfit their stores, offices and businesses. We want to buy from you. We really, really do. But sometimes you make it so hard or inconvenient, that going elsewhere is the easiest decision of all. Repeat business is the best business. Focus the right way on serving your existing clients, and your client churn and need for adding new clients will be dramatically reduced. Perhaps it’s remedial, but here are a few pointers / reminders to keep that recurring business coming your way are always helpful: - Don’t leave your clients without a point of contact when you are out of office. I understand you deserve to go on vacation like every other human being, but let your client know who to contact and work with to keep things moving during your absence. Leaving your client in a black hole for a week while you are gone while they are scrambling to get a new store opened or major initiative installed, likely means you will be coming home with one less client. - Contracts are essential, I get it. Please bundle all contracts for a certain product or service into a master agreement for one signature. You’re not making it easy or quick for your client to sign 50 separate contracts for every individual store or site as an example - but your competition probably will. - Timely responsiveness is the gift that keeps on giving. Making your client feel like a pest making numerous calls and texts to get quick ETA’s or updates on quotes and deliveries is a fast way to guarantee your client won’t be reaching out to you anymore at all soon. - Overreliance on texts or emails. Texts have their place, but a 2 minute call can replace a week worth’s of text messages for context and most importantly - to feel and gauge the emotion of how the client is feeling. Are they agitated, thrilled, hesitant, satisfied? Talking, not texting, tells you the real story on how things are going so you can preemptively and proactively respond to being the only sales rep that your client will ever want to work with for your product line. The cashier in a fast casual (or, even worse, the tablet where the cashier used to be) typically remains a guest’s last meaningful contact with the restaurant. That ought to make you nervous – because it leaves you with no chance to make something right at the table or to make your guests feel valued. At two of my fast casual clients, we changed that so guests can expect a manager table visit just as they would expect in a full-service restaurant. At one, the manager had previously stationed at expo to ensure consistency and standards. Initially, they told me they did table visits, but those really only happened after a rush – in other words, when guests had already moved on to be at home or at work! When we changed that, the spirit of hospitality and connecting with a guest became part of an overall program that lifted this company’s profit by 5 points. I also have two fast casual clients who are having serious internal conversations about speed. Speed remains the “fast” in “fast casual”; if you’re not delivering on that, you’re sunk vs. the competition. So having habits and systems to ensure speed remains paramount. ✅ You can make your concept stupid simple... ✅ Create world-class training... ✅ Build tools to make operating easier... ✅ Provide the best support... ✅ Have every little single detail figured out.. ...and it STILL won't matter if you choose the wrong franchisee. And they will TANK your company. Franchisors - don't be so tempted by: ❌ Prospects who only talk a good game ❌ All the sexy growth you see in the media ❌ Franchise fees ❌ Even people with money and track record ...that you don't do your due diligence. You don't say NO if they don't match your values, commitment, and mission. Or they don't have the capital nor people needed to properly invest. Anyone got stories?
