Time for more innovation in charter schools. Start with governance. Does Microsoft, Apple or any other successful company have a local board in every community they serve? No. Their product is excellent. Customers buy it. If the product stinks, customers don’t buy it. Charter school authorizers should be able to contract directly with operators of proven charter models. These proven operators can still engage local community for advice and guidance, too. Most probably would/will. Why? Because they are successful operators and they know what it takes to serve communities well. States can maintain their current authorizer approaches. But states should add “direct chartering” opportunities to their arsenal, too. Watch what happens when successful operators are directly empowered by authorizers.
