Question: Would it be helpful if I shared weekly grant opportunities? Applications are open for the Black Educators Fellowship, a resource to support Black educators in Philadelphia. Eligible educators (teachers, para-professionals, school counselors and social workers, coaches, community educators, etc.) can apply for small grants of between $500-$2000 to support educational units, programs, learning experiences, initiatives, or classroom resources that are designed to empower Black children and youth or provide resources for students with disabilities. The minimum grant award amount is $500, and a limited number of grants up to $2000 will be awarded. This is a great read for those with the understanding that this is difficult time for many people namely, black people for the reasons outlined below by Paul. The other groups we need to consider using this wonderful thoughtful speak up / reach out model are our Jewish, Palestinian and other middle eastern colleagues experiencing the discriminatory behaviors attached to the heart wrenching events in Israeli-Gaza region. If you know you care, show you care. Don't let fear of saying the wrong thing stop you. Try this out and modify if needed for your authenticity. Remember: Silence is not a option - it only encourages / empowers the oppressors and does nothing for the oppressed (except cause greater hurt and pain). The “Doll Test” is another reason why I shared my conversation with my son about Racism. The "Doll Test" was a series of experiments conducted in the 1940s by psychologists Kenneth and Mamie Clark to study the impact of segregation on African American children. The results of the test showed that most Black children preferred the white dolls over the Black dolls, and often described the Black dolls as "bad". The Clarks concluded that segregation, prejudice, and discrimination caused Black children to develop a sense of inferiority and self-hatred. Now, I ask AGAIN, Why does messaging and representation matter? We are not only fighting for justice and equality, we are fighting to protect the formation of our children’s identities and mental wellbeing. 👦🏽 Our children’s self-concepts (how they perceive themselves) and self-esteem (the value they place on themselves) are influenced by societal and cultural messages. 👉🏾 Positive Psychological Effects of Messaging and Representation: ✅ Fosters a sense of identity validation when children see people like themselves in positions of power or influence. ✅ Strengthens cultural pride and combats internalized stereotypes. ✅ Encourages children to dream bigger and align their self-concept with aspirational goals. ✅ Boosts self-worth by normalizing diversity in leadership, media, and societal narratives. ✅ Reduces stigma and negative perceptions associated with marginalized identities. 👉🏾 Negative Psychological Effects due to racist Messaging and Lack of Representation: ✅ Leads to identity marginalization, where children feel excluded or “invisible” in societal narratives. ✅ Reinforces negative stereotypes, particularly among children and adolescents, impacting their understanding of their potential and value. ✅ Causes feelings of inferiority or inadequacy, especially for those who do not see their identities reflected in leadership or success stories. ✅ Leads to chronic stress and impostor syndrome, as individuals may struggle to reconcile their personal worth with societal messaging. 👉🏾 Call to Action Protect your mental health and that of your children. Educate them and monitor their mental and emotional state. If we are struggling as adults, imagine what is going through their little heads. Our mental health and our children’s mental wellbeing is our problem to address because decision-makers and the majority have proven that they couldn’t care less about how we see and feel about ourselves. And for those who say I am being divisive, please research the difference between divisiveness and empowerment. Because you do not agree with what I am saying does not mean I am being divisive. I do not speak of hate or promote prejudice. I share my lived experience and facts. Remember that your emotions do not and cannot erase facts or history. 🎤 Disagreement does not cause divisiveness, but lack of validation and disrespect does! #MyChildMyResponsibilty #ProtectMyLegacy
