Terry Shaw and I had a lot of fun debating whether Category Creation was a legitimate criterion for CEOs to evaluate CMO candidates on in the interview process. My hot take was that if a CEO is asking about Category Creation in the interview, it gives the CMO insight into the CEOs expectations, as well as the opportunity to evaluate if the CEO has the focus and fortitude to not only build a company, but build a new lens by which customers look at the market. As product managers, we’re trained to talk about benefits rather than features with customers/prospects . But we often engage C-level peers in process discussions - why they can’t have exactly what they want, exactly when they want it. Instead, we should be applying our product skills to understanding what matters to them, and building executive coalitions around key issues. Sage advice from Brian Walker's latest C&C Substack: "There are two types of services providers - implementers or product & engineering (Prodineering!). Implementers will face a race to the bottom as their services become increasingly commoditized and generative AI impacts the value of repeat implementations of solutions like Shopify or even commercetools.
