Liberty Corner, New Jersey, United States: The United States Golf Association (USGA) has introduced a new Competitive Fairness Gender Policy, set to take effect for the 2025 championship season. The policy, which ensures the USGA’s long-standing commitment to welcoming all gender identities and gender expressions while maintaining equity in competition, reflects several changes related to transgender athletes. The new policy ensures competitive opportunities are provided for athletes playing in USGA women’s competitions without allowing an unfair advantage for athletes who have received the sports performance benefits of male puberty, meaning athletes must be assigned female at birth or have transitioned to female prior to going through male puberty in order to compete. Current scientific and medical research shows that sports performance differences exist between biological sexes and such differences begin to occur during the onset of puberty.  “We remain committed to providing opportunities for everyone to compete for a national title or team but have made changes to our eligibility criteria that reflects current scientific data and strives to maintain competitive integrity,” said USGA CEO Mike Whan, formerly Commissioner of the LPGA Tour. “Our updated policy reflects a thoughtful and thorough process during which the USGA consulted with leading medical professionals from around the world,” he added.  More details regarding the specifics of the policy, which also includes requirements for transgender males, can be found here.  The USGA said it will continue to monitor data and research as it is made available regarding transgender athletes. “The policy is not intended to apply to recreational, non-elite competitions or participatory events, teams or leagues, where different considerations may be taken into account when establishing such criteria,” said a USGA spokesperson.

Carlsbad, California, United States: Topgolf Callaway Brands Corp has announced its intention to separate its equipment and golf entertainment businesses into two independent companies. The split comes 3½ years after the two companies merged following Callaway’s acquisition of Topgolf in March 2021. Callaway will consist of the company’s existing golf equipment and active lifestyle businesses, as well as Toptracer, and is expected to retain all existing Topgolf Callaway Brands financial debt. Topgolf will have no financial debt and be funded with ‘a significant cash balance’, but new venue development plans for 2025 to be reduced to ‘mid-single digit range’. Callaway reported revenues of US$2.5 billion (including Toptracer) over the 12-month trading period from Q2 2023 to Q2 2024, while Topgolf reported revenues of US$1.8 billion over the same timescale. Callaway will be led by Chief Executive Chip Brewer, while Artie Starrs will remain as Chief Executive of Topgolf. Brewer said: “Over the last decade plus, we have transformed Callaway into the number one brand in golf equipment, while building a successful and complementary apparel and accessory business.  “We believe this business, on a stand-alone basis, will be well understood and valued by the market. Since our merger with Topgolf, we have made considerable investments in the Topgolf business that have dramatically expanded its scale, digital capabilities and venue profitability. These investments, combined with the hard work of the Topgolf team, have allowed us to outperform our original growth and free cash flow expectations. “Looking forward, we remain convinced that Topgolf is a high-quality, free cash flow generating business with a significant future value creation opportunity. The NGF says venues such as Topgolf are attracting a younger and more diverse audience to golf. California, United States: The National Golf Foundation’s \(NGF\) latest research on golf participation trends in the United States reveals that interest in the game is continuing to grow at record levels, with 2024 on track to be the fifth consecutive year where more than 500 million rounds of golf will be played across the 50 states. The NGF revealed that 26.6 million golfers played on a course in 2023 and an additional 18.4 million played at a location with a simulator or at an entertainment venue such as Topgolf.  Golfers in the 18-34 age group are now the largest group of on-course players, at an estimated 6.3 million.  These rising figures are widely credited to how younger players are engaging with golf in new ways as social media, new apparel trends, YouTubers and other content creators inspire a new wave of golfers. Topgolf and other simulator venues have also driven younger players to the course in record numbers. In 2023, 5.4 million people in the 18-to-34 age category participated in solely off-course golf activities. The NGF also reports that a record number of 3.4 million people played on a golf course for the first time in 2023. Among young people who aren’t actively playing golf, seven million are ‘very interested’ in taking up the game. Female interest in the game is also on the rise. In 2023, 26% of on-course golfers were women. Approximately seven million women and girls played on a golf course in 2023, the highest level of participation since 2006. Golf course accessibility is also a major factor in driving participation for 18-34-year-olds.
