Feeling nostalgic today as I reflect on one of the very first brand partnerships I ever did! 🎮✨ Back in the day, while working for Pax Prime/Reedpop, I had the incredible opportunity to help put together a memorable partnership with a few ReedPoppers Kyle Marsden-Kish Larry Settembrini, Lance Fensterman, Lauren DeMaio and Ryan Hartman between Microsoft, Doritos, and Mountain Dew. Our goal was to add value to the Pax Fan, and we did just that with an exciting live scavenger hunt at PAX Prime. Participants collected points for the chance to win several Xbox Ones at a live auction. Specially marked Mountain Dew and Doritos packages contained codes, and attendees scanned hidden QR codes throughout the convention center. The excitement was palpable as fans competed to gather as many points as possible for the live auction held on Sunday night. It was a brilliant blend of digital engagement and physical activity, creating an unforgettable experience for the gaming community. This partnership highlighted the power of collaboration and innovative marketing strategies to drive engagement and brand loyalty. Looking back, this experience taught me so much about the potential of creative marketing and the impact of seamless collaboration. As I continue to explore new avenues in brand partnerships, I often reflect on this iconic moment that brought us together and pushed the boundaries of what’s possible. Here’s to more creative and impactful collaborations in the future! 🚀🙌 Today, I'm leveraging those early lessons in exciting new ways with brands on Roblox. Imagine sports fans signing up for rewards from their favorite sports teams by participating in virtual events and challenges. One of my favorite recent projects is the Zenni Optical integration in Watermelon GO on Roblox. Another groundbreaking initiative is Ikea's "Careers Done Different" campaign on Roblox. Ikea is revolutionizing recruitment marketing by creating a virtual store and inviting players to apply for real positions. I've found 157 titles. 💪🔎 I highlight 4️⃣ titles of them. ✅ “Eternal Hero” by Supersonic from Unity A big Israeli publisher 🇮🇱 has released a stunning, high-quality action RPG. ✨ “Eternal Hero” has two standout elements: game art and the deep gameplay. Its highly polished game art, with delightful details such as the excellent jump animation and the battles' SFX. ⚔️ The game’s depth is also a highlight, with a character with dozens of features. Despite this depth, “Eternal” retains the easy gameplay of Hypercasual, with mechanics similar to Idle Arcade, combats that don't kill the player quickly, short dialogs, and an arrow tutorial that remains throughout the game. 👍 There are still some changes to be made, but there's no doubt that “Eternal Hero” is a promising Hybridcasual. 📈 Since August the game has amassed almost US$150k in IAP revenue with 220k downloads. Developed by Rivvy Games, "Eternal Hero" was transferred to Supersonic's account on September 16th. 🗓️ ✅ “Unscrew Pin Jam: Nuts & Bolts” by Supersonic from Unity This thought-provoking puzzle mixes “Screw Jam” by Rollic 🔩 with “Tap Away” by Popcore. ↗️ Developed by EOgames, "Unscrew Pin Jam" was transferred to Supersonic's account on August 29th. 🗓️ 👆 In my opinion, the Hypercasual giant is accelerating in the Hybridcasual race with these two games. 👆 ✅ “HexaCoin Harmony - Merge Tiles” by Voodoo “HexaCoin” is another attempt by the big French publisher 🇫🇷 to launch its version of “Hexa Sort”. Happy Wednesday all, or at least it would be if not for yesterday's news. Let's get into the round-up, then. 1. Microsoft shutdown four studios, including BAFTA-award winning Tango Gameworks who recently released "Hi-Fi Rush" and Arkane Austin. The loss of these studios is huge, make no mistake. I've not written on it yet as it was my news partner-in-crime who grabbed it for PSU but I've plenty of thoughts brewing, and you might see something from me soon. https://lnkd.in/gGy7MzyG 2. I covered a couple of the events regarding the Helldivers 2 PSN account linking controversy, but then I thought it would be worth putting everything together in one, clear explainer piece of what happened and what's still going on - so I did! https://lnkd.in/gMdJcfT8 3. More news regarding poor decisions made by games industry executives, Activision reportedly rejected a pitch from Vicarious Visions prior to merging the team entirely into Blizzard for a Tony Hawks Pro Skater 3+4 Remake. Activision instead wanted VV to focus efforts on supporting Call Of Duty & Diablo, which I don't think I can find to be anything less than depressing. Not because I'm a huge THPS fan, but because I find it so short-sighted to go from publishing a diverse string of games to only publishing a few behemoths that have shown they have chips in their 'forever-game' armour. This one's for me, because I've put 1000+ hours into Apex Legends, and the now current season is once again changing the game forever. Lastly, Ubisoft's guitar-learning game turned subscription service Rocksmith+ will arrive on PS5 and Steam in June. I was a big Guitar Hero/Rock Band-head back in the day, and Rocksmith played a key role in my journey to start playing guitar. So Yahoo CEO Jim Lanzone is set to join Snap Inc.'s board. Probably no big deal. But, FWIW, in 2014, Yahoo considered (and maybe did?) investing in Snap at a $10B value. Marisa Mayer was then CEO. https://lnkd.in/eFV94yYc After soaring to ridiculous heights in 2021 (~ $85B), Snap now trades at $15B. Yahoo was taken private by Apollo Global Management, Inc. along with AOL for $5B. It was then generating $8B in revenues and profitable. A profitable, growing Yahoo would in normal times be well received by Wall Street. Assuming it's grown since, and commanding a 2X P/S ratio, in theory it's could be a $15-20B business in terms of market value (if not more). But are times normal? I don't know, so unsure of any public market window. Right now, a tie up with an already publicly-traded Snap is an interesting option.

I recently sat on a mentorship call with one of our new clan members who had just been laid off from the Xbox team. She was in the final round of interviews with a well-funded indie studio but was worried about something that many in her position might relate to—what if the studio runs out of money and she ends up job hunting again? I asked her if she planned to ask the founder about the company's financial situation during the final interview. She hesitated and said she wasn’t comfortable with the idea—afraid it might upset the founder. But here’s the thing: candidates should feel empowered to ask tough questions. Understanding a company’s financial health is crucial, especially if you're coming from a position where job security has already been compromised. Asking about the company’s revenue sources, project funding, and burn rate isn’t just about knowing whether you'll have a paycheck in six months—it’s about assessing the company’s overall stability. It also tells you a lot about the workplace culture. If the company is transparent about how long their runway is and how they’re managing expenses, that’s a sign of a healthy, well-managed organization. In today’s market, especially during economic uncertainty, it's important to gauge how a company is making and spending money. You want to be confident that the team you’re joining is positioned to weather any storms ahead. So, for anyone in a similar situation—don’t hesitate to ask about a company’s financials. Been asked this one a lot lately and seen a few posts about it, so here's my take: You shouldn’t include ex-companies or ex-titles in your name on LinkedIn. When we label ourselves with our past companies and titles in our own name, that's all we become instead of the sum of our skills and experience that make us the unique, work-creature we are. You’re the one who took the actions, learned new proficiencies, refined edges, had great achievements, and hard-fought failures. These merely happened at that company. I understand why people do this—thinking it attracts recruiters as you are an "unknown quantity"—but on the flip it can be a turn off to recruiters if they are looking for “new fits” or that they're "overloaded with folks from x or y company." In the end, I believe it devalues you and your own confidence. When you are looking around, editing your resume, interview prepping, it’s you. More practically, these are the things that need to be reflected and communicated in your profile. And yes, this goes beyond work, but we’re talking LinkedIn here, so we can chat with Henry, the cat, and philosophy later with him, but if you’d like to talk more about profiles, I’m always here.

Rebuilding a brand in the eyes of marketers and kickstarting sales motion can be tricky. I was fortunate to have received a masterclass during my almost three years at the music app Shazam from my former boss and CRO Greg Glenday in the art of manifestation. For context, Shazam was one of the most downloaded apps in the world reaching hundreds of millions of users but had prior hiccups on scaling advertiser revenue. A bulk of the revenue came from the affiliate business from the streaming services. We needed marketers to rethink how they viewed Shazam and Greg launched the Shazam for Brands concept. It was a simple yet consistent messaging across all of our sales marketing efforts and how we spoke to brands + promoted at all of our B2B efforts. * We showed up in mass at Cannes and in high profile places under Shazam for Brands. We built buzz with products that weren't necessary ad related but allowed us to show innovation and get marketers excited again. * We launched an integration with Snapchat where you could Shazam within their app environment. We demoed this product in every meeting under Shazam for Brands. * We launched a TV show on Fox TV with Mark Burnett and Jamie Foxx called "Beat Shazam." We sold advertiser integrations under the Shazam for Brands banner. * We partnered with AR company Zappar and released AR within the app under the Shazam for Brand moniker. Once we had created market buzz, we introduced a takeover unit and within a matter of months we went from selling banner ad units to high impact takeovers. The business was starting to scale right when we were acquired by Apple. Greg Glenday was relentless in his pursuit of reframing the company as an ad supported marketing leader. I learned a ton about the importance of manifesting the direction you want to take a company. The irony that the Shazam app is now ad free is not lost on me 😁

If I EVER become apart of these statistics by being that CEO, I hope every one of my employees vote me out of the company. Any executive that sees these studios as failures should be ashamed. The shittiest part is, they shit down to fill investor pockets. “Look how much money we saved/made!” “Look at our cash flow.” It’s quarterly earnings time, and there’s no doubt this played a factor. The antitrust laws in this country need to change. And before “But Will, that’s such a. Change in the statement being made.” It’s not. If the Microsoft purchase had been blocked, there is a significant chance these studios would not be closed. Why? They wouldn’t have needed to recoup $72 BILLION dollars they spent acquiring one of the worlds largest, most valuable studios. They spent $72 billion to acquire more games for game pass, to acquire more game pass subs because the gamepass model isn’t as profitable as it was. This is what happens when a multi-level acquisition isn’t vetted properly. I hope the FCC goes after them for the serious number of jobs lost since the acquisition.
