A recent report from the CT Education Association found that the majority of teachers are concerned about student mental health including increased rates of depression, stress, and suicide risk. Thankfully, there are things schools can do (and are doing!) to address these needs. However, it's so important to acknowledge that schools should not be the de facto mental health provider system! Here are a few ideas, all of which we are deeply involved with at CHDI. 1) The SHAPE system is a comprehensive needs assessment that can assess strengths and gaps at the school and district level. 2) Schools can screen students for mental health conditions and suicide risk -- but beware! If you plan to screen, you MUST have sufficient capacity to provide services to students who screen positive. That means increasing access to a range of effective services before, or simultaneous to, rolling out screening initiatives. 3) We are piloting a new peer support model so that students can develop skills for recognizing concerns and helping their peers -- very exciting! 4) We have trained hundreds of school and community clinicians to deliver CBITS and BounceBack. These are in-school, evidence-based models for addressing trauma and mental health needs. 5) Very important -- the districts who are doing this work best have established strong connections with their local community-based provider organizations, who can deliver a full array of services for students with more significant needs. This is an advanced course examining executive functioning difficulties in neurodivergent populations, including autism, ADHD, and dyslexia. A framework that refocuses on the importance of self-regulation based on Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs will be outlined, along with the essential precursors to emotional development. The impact of a skill deficit in the areas of executive functioning will be described through in-depth case studies, indicating how a relationship-based approaches addresses language and behaviors. In-depth clinical examples will explain the need for bottom-up developmental therapeutic interventions, as opposed to those that prioritize top-down consequence-based methods.

This four-hour training will stress the need for a clear theoretical rationale and/or research basis for creative interventions with children and adolescents. Creativity employed in the clinical setting without a theoretical objective or research basis can result unpredictable therapeutic outcomes. The therapist needs to be guided by a clear rationale for the directive interventions employed in therapy. As consultants and trainers, Drs.
