    This article illustrates how George Washington University (GW) in Washington, D.C. saves money on its redundant, reliable, and all-fiber network. In 1999, the university's Information Systems and Services group adopted a technology plan and a budget to achieve its goals, and set out four initiatives with which to do so. These initiatives are the following: 1) all fiber networks, in which the cost difference between recabling the main campus is analyzed; 2) network computing, in which all GW…

    This article illustrates how George Washington University (GW) in Washington, D.C. saves money on its redundant, reliable, and all-fiber network. In 1999, the university's Information Systems and Services group adopted a technology plan and a budget to achieve its goals, and set out four initiatives with which to do so. These initiatives are the following: 1) all fiber networks, in which the cost difference between recabling the main campus is analyzed; 2) network computing, in which all GW applications are accessed by users through their Web browsers; 3) integrated infrastructure, in which the number of switches, routers, and other network gear is controlled; and, 4) distributed support, in which the importance of a frontline support person is acknowledged. By completing these four initiatives, GW has built a reliable and cost-effective communications and computing infrastructure. INSET: Why Collapse The Backbone?.
