NEWS: Colorado State University Expands Veterinary Health & Education Complex -- Colorado State University broke ground in May of 2024 on a $230 million redevelopment of the Veterinary Health and Education Complex (VEHC) in Fort Collins. Designed by Clark & Enersen, the expansion and renovation project will feature a 213,000-sf replacement teaching hospital that will offer unique opportunities for immersive education. The sustainable structure will feature two 80-seat active learning classrooms with interactive workstations, as well as eight exam rooms equipped with advanced simulation technologies. A $13 million livestock hospital will also be constructed adjacent to the Johnson Family Equine Hospital to provide additional medical, surgical, and ambulatory care facilities. Nearly doubling existing capacities, the reimagined VEHC will support a rigorous curriculum that emphasizes resilience, professionalism, and wellbeing. All four years of the Doctor of Veterinary Medicine program will be collocated on the South Campus to foster collaboration and exchange, enhanced by community spaces where students, faculty, and staff can gather. Tetrad Real Estate is the master developer for the complex, which is being built by JE Dunn Construction with Martin/Martin as engineer and Energy Studio as energy consultant. Animal hoarding cases are complex sources of shelter intake. Cases require significant planning, collaboration, and resources, often from multiple responding organizations. This recent study by Biana G. Tamimi, BVMS MRCVS, Lisa Kisiel, Emily Dolan, and Elizabeth Berliner in the ASSOCIATION OF SHELTER VETERINARIANS INC's Journal of Shelter Medicine and Community Animal Health (JSMCAH) described cat hoarding cases in New York City not criminally pursued by the ASPCA, case outcomes when managed by a spay/neuter and relinquishment program utilizing a collaborative approach with caregivers, and characteristics or interventions leading to better outcomes. https://lnkd.in/gYxtWF4t #VeterinaryMedicine #VeterinaryResearch

Dr. Barry Kipperman, who teaches veterinary ethics at UC Davis and the University of Missouri, responds to the AVMA House of Delegates’ adoption of their new Principles of Veterinary Medical Ethics that says euthanasia, slaughter, and depopulation are ethical veterinary procedures when the AVMA Guidelines are followed. Kipperman says, “many methods of animal killing sanctioned by the AVMA's guidelines on animal death are considered so inhumane and unethical that they are banned in other countries,” and calls on veterinarians to contact their AVMA state delegate to voice their concerns.
