“Why does your XR project cost so much?” Surely it’s the most common question we get from clients. Some might be saying it for bargaining tactics, but some are genuinely concerned because they don’t have enough knowledge to fathom the number. I could explain the detail of my business and why it costs this much. But to be honest, that’s not what the clients actually care about. It’s not that the question of cost is irrelevant, just that it’s missing another complementary question. Every project has a cost… but every project also has a value. If cost is the dollar amount of the expenses, value is the result that you received —and most can be calculated in dollar amount too. Just like if a car costs $X, you wouldn’t be too concerned about the manufacturer’s labor, material, R&D, logistic and marketing costs. What you worry is, will spending $X gives me much more than $X in value? Cost-benefit analysis is critical for decision making of every XR projects we discussed. We discussed on how if the XR project is implemented, it could save/gain them more than what they invested to the project. Of course sometimes the result to the discussion is: no, it does not bring them more value. In such cases, we’re always the first one trying to convince our clients to forego the project, or at least rethink the plan. The key is discussion on benefits rather than the actual numerical cost which doesn’t mean anything without the former. For example, would you rather spend $1M or $10K for an XR project? If an XR project costs $1M, but it saves your company $2M or even more, would you convince your directors and procurement division to do it? Absolutely. On the other hand, even if by some miracle of hard bargaining and massive features shaving, an XR project costs $10K… but it doesn’t really help anything, would you convince your company to go ahead just because it’s ‘cheap’? I hope the answer is no. Focus on the value first, then we can discuss cost in relation to that.

#VASA1 I worry about this one. Imagine taking any still #photo and making it #say anything you want. I respect Julian Ridden and he's onto something with his post, but I also have concerns about using #voices without respect for a person's #culture or #language. In other words, *forcing* a BIPOC person to speak "whitennness" is a problem. Similarly, having any person speaking as if they are from a #culture they do not represent is also problematic. Or making a #tech #leader speak about topics they would avoid or using my likeness to make it appear that I am saying #unethical things. It's all problematic. This moves the conversation away from the political spectrum (the usual concerns) and provides additional #ethical considerations for #AI and #voice technology. #Technology #Innovation #Ethics #ArtificialIntelligence #Voice #AI

I think it's overall best is to let this thing fade back into nothingness. But if any credible press decide to write about Terrence Howard's (or other people's claims) of him "inventing XR," here's your technical background info: What Terrence Howard's failed/abandoned patent describes is a subset of the CAVE idea, invented ~20 years earlier (1990s). His patent application would have been (and probably was) challenged by any competent examiner. see: https://lnkd.in/gurbMwsT As you move around a special room, fixed 2D displays in or on the walls change the perspective of the CGI displayed to match what you would see if it was true 3D. In Howard's patent, it's just the windows that are dynamic displays, walls are just walls. So it's a narrower subset of the CAVE idea. Some of us in the field have built these kinds of rooms, and well before Howard wrote down his idea. In fact, some of us even looked at making airplane windows virtual (<- would make airplanes much more efficient). It's a big challenge. I'd generally prefer to not have to wear any HMDs for XR if the room itself could create the required illusions. But this particular approach is more expensive and doesn't scale well. You either have to grow these video walls to be the size of Hollywood movie sound stages (see today's LED walls used in production), or you have to wear special glasses (again) that allow more modestly-sized walls to show different views to different people in close sequence (120/240/higher fps). If you do this wrong, people will get sick or at least very confused. Either way, this set of issues is exactly what lead people to try to make the individually-worn HMD approach viable and affordable. Everyone gets their own 3D perspective, regardless of what others in the room are doing. So in some ways, Howard's big idea is the opposite of 99% of the current direction of XR and would only really make sense if we could make ultra-cheap holographic displays, or if we lived on Hollywood sound stages. The fact that the patent was abandoned suggests perhaps the examiners also found plenty of prior art and challenged the novelty of the idea. The number of references by major companies indicates nothing. Patent lawyers referencing this application couldn't know whether it would be granted or not (it takes years). So they had to play it safe and take note of it. Notice no new references came after it was abandoned. Thankfully, it's not a thing. Terrence Howard had an idea. Good on him. It wasn't novel, nor was it very feasible as described. Move along. Hello fellow XR Devs, I've noticed that many of us are less enthusiastic in making tutorial scenes (I used to as well). It's important to put extra effort into creating tutorials to help users enjoy and understand your experience better. (It helps a ton when you show your experience to people who are new to XR all together, which is quite often ) Creating a comprehensive tutorial at the beginning of every VR experience ensures that new users adapt quickly and have a lasting positive impression of your experience.

RoadToVR: "New XR Platform From Samsung and Google Will be Announced, if Not Launched, This Year" (Ben Lang)  (Jul 12, 2024) This week Samsung and Google confirmed their forthcoming “XR platform” will be announced this year, though it’s unclear if it will actually launch before the end of 2024. It was early 2023 when Samsung, Google, and Qualcomm first announced their collaboration on an “XR platform” based on Android. The timing of that announcement made it sound like we’d probably hear more about that platform and whatever devices it would power in late 2023 or maybe early 2024. But just a few months later, Apple formally unveiled its long-rumored Vision Pro headset, and announced it would be launching in early 2024. Since then, we’ve heard little about the XR effort from Samsung, Google, and Qualcomm—save for some rumblings that the companies may have taken a step back to reassess their plans after seeing what Apple planned to launch with Vision Pro. This week, however, the companies confirmed it will be revealed by the end of 2024—and perhaps even launched by then. During the Samsung Unpacked event this week, Google’s SVP of Platform & Devices, Rick Osterloh, took to the stage and spoke briefly about the future of the company’s collaboration with Samsung: “Looking forward, we’re collaborating to bring next-generation experiences across Galaxy products. From smartphones and wearables, to even future technologies, like the upcoming XR platform we’ve been working to develop in close partnership with Samsung and Qualcomm for next-generation devices,” Osterloh said. “You’ll want to stay tuned for that. It’s an exciting new era in mobile computing, and we’re thrilled to take our partnership with Samsung to the next level.” Samsung’s Head of Mobile, TM Roh, took to the stage afterward to concur, adding that the XR platform in question would come by the end of 2024. “I appreciate [Osterloh] and his team at Google for their constant partnership that fuels innovation and ignites new possibilities, like our new XR platform coming this year.” We still don’t know exactly what shape the so-called “XR platform” will take. While it was initially expected the companies were working on something to compete with Meta’s game-focused Quest platform, Vision Pro’s emphasis on more general productivity and spatial computing may have changed priorities. And even still, Samsung, Google, and Qualcomm might not want to challenge either front. Instead, they might try to stake out their claim with mobile-focused transparent AR glasses—maybe starting with basic smartglasses functionality. For now all we know is that we’ll learn more later this year, but it’s still unclear if we’ll see an announcement or an actual product launch by the end of 2024." It would be so amazing to play Arkham Horrors games with this feature! But Merged Reality is not only for fun. I read an interesting research paper that shows how it can help students learn history. The possibilities are endless!

Time for some Wednesday wisdom hump day reading! Back towards something a bit more technical for this week, this piece here from Axis which does a pretty good job explaining how Meta is finally starting to think about how their popular VR headsets might be used in the education classroom. As somebody that has been using these headsets for incursions and events for years, classroom management is the number one question I am often asked, thinking about making sure kids are in the right app and doing the right thing and not getting lost. And as someone who's spent a lot of time over the years asking "what do you see now?" to try and get kids to go in the lift or click a button, I get it! So the idea that Meta is doing this is exciting, although the piece highlights there will still be challenges, like passing headsets amongst students and multiple users. But I'd be interested in your thoughts, particularly if you're a teacher that follows me - will this transform XR in your classroom? Let me know. :)

Can XR enhance safety and compliance training? What is XR: XR (Extended Reality), is an umbrella term encompassing Virtual Reality, Augmented Reality, and Mixed Reality. Using XR simulations (just like playing games on oculus headset!) offers a multitude of benefits. Especially in industries where precision and safety are paramount, XR can: 1. Improve training outcomes because personnel can actually interact spatially instead of looking at presentations and static physical models 2. Reduce costs to conduct the training… meeting physically and organization training can be a big cost - especially if done several times a year which is often the case to maintain compliance 3.
