One of the most transformative projects of my early SEO career was working with the American Management Association (AMA) to enhance their digital presence. Despite having a strong brand and impactful messaging, their website wasn’t performing well in search rankings after a recent website migration. We needed to uncover the root cause of these issues. That’s when we partnered with their VP of Digital Marketing, Piera Palazzolo Palazzo, to dig into the details and present a comprehensive technical SEO checklist. Through our analysis, we discovered several technical barriers—crawl errors, sluggish page load times, and outdated JavaScript—that were quietly limiting the site’s visibility. By focusing on these technical fixes and optimizing the site’s structure post-migration, we laid the foundation for sustainable growth. The improvements were tangible: increased organic traffic, better engagement, and a noticeable rise in membership conversions. This experience reinforced a crucial lesson: technical SEO is the backbone of organic success. While content and strategy are important, ensuring your technical foundation is rock-solid—especially after a website migration—can be the key to unlocking real growth. Just need to clarify some assumptions about SEO... ❌ Google does not show you the best search result available on the internet. ❌ Google does not show you the best business available based on your search query. ❌ Google does not show you the business with the highest or best reviews first. ❌ Google does not show you the website that's had the most SEO experts work on it. ❌ Google does not show you the same exact search results every time. ❌ Google does not show you the same results they show your colleagues for a similar (or even identical) search. Organic search may be important for your business, but please remember Google is not perfect and is constantly adjusting. Websites that "do everything right" can show up lower than websites that seemingly "do everything wrong." Google's gonna be Google 🤷‍♂️ Just focus on content that will help move your customer to the next step in their journey with your brand.

I will shout it from the rooftops: Shiny new tech and fancy tools are great, but the fundamentals will always lay the foundation for longterm performance. SEO is a million little things done right each and every day. Don't lose for the forest for the trees. (The forest? Providing value to users so that you're the one that they turn to. The trees? All the fun new ways you can present information.)

I want to empathize with publishers losing traffic, but we have to be real... Attention spans are short and there's very little info on the internet that users need so badly they'll jump through multiple hurdles to get it. So why do so many websites make click 3+ times just to see the content I came to read? -cookie consent -email opt-in -ads -overlays -unrelated videos I had to close ALL of these on the last 8 articles I opened this morning. That's a miserable user experience and poor experiences equate to low brand affinity. Both result in lost rankings.
