This coffee sized deck warmed my heart this week, and got me reflecting on the role of central teams in organizations. Central teams usually work best when they're focused on being enablers. When they treat their systems like platforms that are products with internal users being the first customers. Initially you might be serving individual developers, but eventually it'll grow into serving teams, and requires all the same work as developing a product when it comes to advocacy, development, feedback, and establishing value. Why? Enablement and accessibility. Great businesses lead with humility when understanding how to adapt their products to better improve the lives of their customers. Great internal teams do the same and constantly balance feature acceleration with investments that also expand the impact of what they offer today through accessibility. I've been an engineer on call in both sprawling enterprise IT settings as well as narrower settings such as running Apache Pulsar and BookKeeper at scale. What I'm reading about wide events, canonical log lines and what Charity Majors is calling Observability 2.0 has me saying YES! But... Yes, wide events and canonical log lines are obviously a great user experience for the on-call engineer under pressure. I worked at Splunk for a while, I've seen what a powerful slice and dice machine over structured logs can do. But it is expensive! What I haven't seen yet is a good discussion of infrastructure costs. How this can be done without exploding costs? Have we designed observability data systems capable of storing huge amounts of structured wide events, with low latency queries and reasonable costs? I'd love to see a paper or a blog post or something that explores wide events from an infrastructure cost perspective, discussing the design space, factors such as scale, cardinality, query patterns, and all the associated trade-offs.

Developing with XM Cloud takes a bit of a shift in mentality. Where you could previously apply changes to your Authoring (CM) instance, that's highly discouraged due to the risk of blocking automatic updates. f your organization’s default system development lifecycle methodology is agile ⚡️, I believe that is a MAJOR mistake. 🫥 Most organizations or enterprises do not neatly fit into either a purely waterfall 💧 or agile ⚡️ approach when it comes to software development. The leadership in tech industry has changed, our roles have evolved. A role of IT business analyst in 2006, when I started my work life, is not the same as today is. Maybe today is a product owner, demand specialist or any role that manages requirements + initiatives + delivery + leader. This is the same for technical roles such as developers, engineering and operations. The technical landscape has changed and also the roles, not only in hard skills but also in soft skills that now have more weight than years, decades, ago. The mentorship of IT leaders is more than necessary because can help to achieve the goals in a sustainable way. Invest in your team's training, not only give them "the role" because they have potential. Potential without action is nothing

I like beer, and don't mind it in a can. From the perspective of the traveling canning line business, there's a powerful insight into providing flexible, niche services, which parallels Software as a Service (SaaS) models. ° Targeting the In-Between Market: Traveling canning lines serve breweries too small to invest in their own equipment but large enough to need consistent service. Similarly, SaaS companies target businesses that require specialized services but aren’t ready for the cost and complexity of building in-house infrastructure. Both models thrive by offering scalability without heavy up-front investments. ° Flexibility as a Core Value: Traveling canning lines are mobile and adaptable, servicing multiple clients with varying needs. SaaS providers similarly offer plug-and-play solutions, serving a broad range of businesses without the need for heavy customization or on-premise deployment. Just as traveling canning lines save breweries from bottlenecks, SaaS solutions prevent businesses from needing to invest in costly, permanent tech too early. ° Serving a Growth Phase: Both businesses provide critical support during a company’s growth phase. They offer agility and scalability until clients eventually outgrow the need and invest in permanent infrastructure.
