The global DMI Design Management Institute community always offers a great way to connect with design leaders all around the world. Thanks to the DMI team for hosting a conference that was both enlightening and comprehensive. No one talks about the part of design leadership where you are just managing software licenses and renewals. It's this thing where you spend an unnecessary amount of time and mental capacity un-doing the effects of deliberate dark patterns to make sure you don't accidentally spend the equivalent of a new car just because someone in sales clicked on your design wrong. It's made worse by the fact that every vendor wants a "relationship" to meet and chat and "get to know one another" and "understand how my business goals align with the product" and I'm like, "Nah, I just want a tool, k?" I'm gonna pitch a conference talk on this, How to Manage Software Vendors and Still Do Your Job (working title...)

Ah, LinkedIn. Land of opportunity and... broetry? You've seen it. You've scrolled past it. You've probably even engaged with it. What am I talking about? Those posts. With endless line breaks. That somehow get a million views. As a design leader, I appreciate the art of visual storytelling. But there's a fine line between engaging content and... well, this: "I hired a candidate with no experience." "Here's what happened:" "They showed up on time." "They asked questions." "They learned quickly." "Now they're our CEO." Okay, I might be exaggerating. But only slightly. Don't get me wrong, I'm all for creativity in professional communication. However, when every other post becomes a "broem," we lose something vital: substance. Real conversations spark true innovation. Complex ideas need room to breathe. And sometimes, those ideas need more than five words per line. So, here's my challenge to all the broets out there: Can you convey your message without resorting to the "broetry" formula? Can you engage your audience with content that's both meaningful and concise? Let's bring back the art of thoughtful discourse. How solid is your client process? When Kate and I first started The Shed, we didn’t have much structure in place. No contracts, no deposits, and revision requests ran wild. Things felt chaotic. Clients were constantly checking in, feeling out of the loop, and honestly, we were just burning out. Then we had a moment of clarity. One project ended with a client telling us they felt disconnected and wished they’d been more involved. That was a turning point for us. We knew we needed to rethink how we approached client relationships. That’s when we developed what we call Creative Mutualism —a collaborative process where clients are part of the creative journey from the very start. At The Shed, we don’t just work for clients, we work *with* them. It’s a friction-free approach that keeps everyone on the same page and creates stronger, more successful outcomes. Kate, as Studio Manager, ensures every project runs smoothly, while I handle the creative direction. Together, we’ve built a process that protects our energy, keeps clients informed, and leads to better work without the stress. Teams and organizations love to be busy. They often demonstrate just how busy they are by being too busy for design research. If design research isn’t part of how your team or organization creates new services and solutions, then you must advocate for it. What can we do when people believe they are too busy to listen to, observe, generate ideas with, and ask questions of the people they serve? Try reaching for: 🧠 Reason — Say, “Yeah, the research requires investing time and time isn’t free. Will the research cost less and be faster than getting things wrong now and trying to fix them later?” (AKA, how much money do you want to spend solving the wrong problem?)e 👍🏾 Improv — Say, “Here’s an example of what we might create based on what we think we know now. Here’s what we learned about how it fails to serve our customers during one 45-minute, 1-on-1 listening session. We should hold more sessions to see what else we can learn.” 🦊 Guile — Do the design research without asking. Deliver great results. Then, reveal design research as the secret spice that should be part of the everyday recipe. 🥰 Seduction — Show a research plan inside your current timeline. Describe how you can deliver the benefits of design research by reallocating the time and resources or by investing in repeatable research practices. You might need a combination of approaches to encourage people to do more design research. Qualitative research is the only way you’ll learn the stories and ideas that let you design well by incorporating the whys behind how people behave and decide. #designresearch #uxr #research #qualitative #leadership
