When I first tipped my toes into Data Visualization and exploration, I was ever so lucky to be introduced to using data for good through organizations like DataKind and ProgramEquity. Both organizations go beyond applications that are shiny and new and consider both the ethics and scale of tech when solving challenges that affect people in real ways without doing harm. It's great to see Victor Dibia, PhD and Chi Wang started writing a book on AutoGen with Manning Publications Co.! Building multi-agent systems is a frontier topic now, and AutoGen is one of the most interesting frameworks in the field. https://mng.bz/mRJM I had some experience writing multi-agent systems with AutoGen, and I like it. I truly believe in agentic workflows, as collaborative agents are the next step after using plain LLMs (even with all the magic of Chain-of-Thought, Self-Consistency, RAG, and even brand-new Reflection and Reasoning). Do not undervalue materials from the authors of AutoGen and AugoGen Studio! They know what they are talking about!

AI Video in Hollywood: Hype or Hopeful Future? Craig Good, a seasoned Pixar animator and current assistant professor at California College of the Arts, recently shared insights that might dampen the enthusiasm for AI-generated video in Hollywood. While platforms like OpenAI's Sora impress with the ability to conjure videos from simple text prompts, Good highlights a significant shortfall—the lack of iterative flexibility necessary for film production. According to Good, the real challenge lies in making minor yet crucial adjustments, such as altering backgrounds or camera angles, which AI tools currently struggle with. His observations underline a fundamental component of filmmaking: iteration. This iterative process, essential for refining a movie's visual storytelling, appears to be a stumbling block for AI in its current form. Despite the limitations, Good remains optimistic about the future possibilities of AI in animation, reminiscent of the pioneering days of computer graphics in the 1980s. His perspective suggests that while AI video technology isn't ready for serious movie production yet, its evolution could eventually integrate seamlessly into the creative process, much like early computer animations evolved into the sophisticated graphics we see today. For now, the consensus among professionals like Good seems to be that AI video tools are more suited to casual content creation than to the precise and meticulous environment of film production. However, as these technologies develop, they may yet play a pivotal role in the next generation of filmmaking. I agree with Good in the short term but the medium to longer term these issues will not be issues as the technology advances. I did all of this with a $20/month sub to HeyGen and the free ElevenLabs acct. AI is going to eat the world.

I recently talked with Tina Shah MD MPH and Shivdev Rao about Abridge, a health tech startup that's trying to solve healthcare’s burnout crisis by using generative artificial intelligence (AI) to automate clinical note-taking. “Over the last couple of decades, we’ve seen things come in between us and our patients [...] and all of a sudden, the most important thing is not at the center,” Shah, Abridge's chief clinical officer, told me. “Abridge is actually seeking to get rid of the paperwork we do, starting with clinical note documentation, so we can just focus on our patients and do what we were trained to do.” Read more: #genAI #health #healthcare #AI
