𝗧𝗼𝗱𝗮𝘆’𝘀 𝗣𝘂𝗯𝗹𝗶𝗰 𝗖𝗵𝗮𝗿𝗴𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗜𝘀 𝗡𝗼𝘁 𝗠𝗲𝗲𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗚𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿𝗻𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗚𝗼𝗮𝗹𝘀 At our recent Future of EV Charging conference at the University of Michigan, our panel of experts discussed a variety of issues related to #EV charging including charger reliability, utilities’ challenges, and the future rollout of EV chargers.  Currently, more than 80 percent of charging is done at home, but as EVs continue to proliferate and the US government supports the expansion of public charging, charger reliability will need to improve.  Omar Isaac Asensio, professor at Georgia Institute of Technology, presented his recent research results showing that drivers experience barriers to public #charging 20%-30% of the time, which is far from the US government’s goal of 97 percent uptime for chargers.  Broken chargers, inoperable card readers, mismatches between vehicle and charger software, and non-EV owners parking in EV charging spots are some of the more common problems with public charging.  (There’s even a phrase for internal combustion vehicles parking in #EV spots “being ICE’d”.)  As our speakers from IPC, Brian Chislea and Brent Frizzell discussed, some of these problems can be addressed through public charger electronic standards that will require public chargers to meet certain codes.  Right now, it’s the Wild West with very few standards.  Hopefully, this will improve in the near future.  As Omar stated, “It’s nearly twice as cost-effective to focus on EV #infrastructure deployment than to subsidize EV sales.”

In my personal experience driving partner integrations (#oem, #tier1, #tsp) in the #commercialmobility space, I estimate that the industry as a whole easily spends 100s of millions in #integrations costs (NRE) along with recurring costs associated with maintaining all these integrations. There is a clear case of net positive ROI for the industry in adopting #containerization strategy and associated operating standards, and making the investments in the necessary tech stack. This also advances Software Defiend Vehicle (#SDV) framework in commercial transportation as it continues to evolve in the era of #decarbonization and #cleanenergy. #telematics #cleantech #iot #emobility

"China's Progress in Sustainable Mobility: NDRC Updates, Smart Vehicle Pilot Approval, Energy Storage Supplier Expansion, and Strategic Partnerships in EV Technology" The National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC) of China held a monthly press conference, addressing the implementation status of various actions aimed at promoting large-scale equipment renewal and consumer goods replacement programs, the development trends of new energy vehicles, and the electricity supply situation during this year's summer peak demand period. The Hangzhou Municipal Development and Reform Commission disclosed that the application by Hangzhou Transportation Investment Group Co., Ltd. for the approval of the feasibility study report on the "Vehicle-Road-Cloud Integration" pilot project for intelligent connected vehicles in the main urban area of Hangzhou has been approved by the city's NDRC. China Petroleum announced the list of winning candidates for the newly added access projects for level-one material suppliers (category 61 dedicated to energy storage materials) in 2024. A total of 22 companies were selected as new suppliers for three bid packages. Among them, companies like Sungrow Power Supply, BYD, CATL, Huawei, EVE Energy, and Sineng Electric were listed for two bid packages. BAIC Group and CATL have announced the signing of a strategic cooperation agreement. According to the agreement, the two parties will collaborate in areas such as CIIC integrated smart chassis, battery swapping technology, and V2G technology. An insider from Voyah stated that the company plans to launch the pure electric family SUV Voyah Zhiyin in Q3 of this year. The model will not have plug-in hybrid or extended-range versions and will primarily compete with Tesla's Model Y. The subsidiary of Baichuan Co., Ltd. has completed the equipment upgrade and debugging for its "annual production of 2 GWh lithium-ion batteries and battery pack project," producing qualified products. The production line can accommodate the production of large-specification cells such as 280Ah and 314Ah, and is currently undergoing capacity ramp-up, entering mass production stage. The groundbreaking ceremony for the Beijing Times Battery Base Project, jointly invested by CATL, BAIC Group, Beijing Energy Group, Xiaomi Group, and others, was held. The Beijing Times Battery Base Project adopts CATL's high-throughput, high automation rate, and high flexibility production lines, which, upon completion, will provide stable mass production, high-quality battery products for customers such as BAIC and Xiaomi in the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region.

Bicycle telematics systems to more than double in next 5 years Berg Insight forecasts that the number of bicycle telematics systems in use in Europe and North America will reach 3.9 million in 2028, up from 1.7 million active units in 2023. With millions of bicycles stolen every year in the two regions, the IoT analyst firm says the main use case driving growth is stolen vehicle tracking, especially as more expensive electric bikes come on the market. Insurance premium discounts offered to owners with an active tracking device have further incentivised uptake while bicycle manufacturers are also including services like predictive maintenance to differentiate their offering. #IoT #BikeTech #Security

We partnered with the University of Michigan Transportation Research Institute (UMTRI) on the first study that leverages distributed AI to explore how EV charging behaviors impact the grid. Our distributed AI platform, Karman, analyzed waveform data at EV charging stations and found that EV charging: - Can cause unexpected rapid swings in current draw - Lowers local voltage significantly - Causes variability in local voltage - Lowers power quality by introducing current harmonics generated from the conversion of AC to DC power - Showed potential to support voltage recovery in the presence of a grid fault ⚡ Karman, powered by a custom NVIDIA module, allows utilities to manage EVs in real-time with unparalleled visibility into the rapidly changing conditions of the grid edge and ensures optimal use of DERs, like EVs, while maintaining grid stability Read more: https://lnkd.in/e44TExiv
