Oracle's Ken Glueck writes last week of his competition: "Everyone in the industry understands that Epic’s CEO Judy Faulkner is the single biggest obstacle to EHR interoperability. She opposes interoperability because it threatens Epic’s franchise. By contrast, Oracle believes outcomes are easier to obtain when providers can collaborate and gain insights across systems, data, and application silos." Which is not incorrect. But markets are about power and control, of getting 'others' to build on and sustain the economic system you started. They're about gravitational pull into your orbit, not technical push into someone else's. And Epic, like UnitedHealth Group and Express Scripts by Evernorth and Mercer, are 'control points' in the American Way of Healthcare. They are the Big EHR and Big Payer and Big PBM and Big EBC writing the source code to keep their flywheels going. They're the apex predators in a blow-up-your-brain ecology of complexity and fragmentation that's getting worse, not better. But if you understand how to #position leverage, if you're fluent in systems thinking, and if you approach #growth as a function of market innovation told and sold with a unique strategy story, then it becomes simple to see space to displace 'the system' that can't be "fixed". Everyone is vulnerable. As is true across industries, financial services firms can’t necessarily predict the full impact and benefits of AI and Gen AI on their business. But that hasn’t stopped them from adopting the technologies. Case in point: J.P. Morgan, with more than 2K AI and ML experts on staff, 62K technologists working on cybersecurity, and plans to onboard a chief data and analytics officer in the near future. In Big Pharma's growth rankings, Lilly took top spot from Novo Nordisk in Q1 Q1, first quarter In the first quarter, 18 of the biopharma industry's top 25 companies posted year-over-year revenue increases, led by Eli Lilly with a 28% gain. The momentum the biopharma industry showed in the fourth quarter of 2023 has continued into this year. With 18 of the industry’s top 25 companies achieving year-over-year revenue gains, the first quarter of 2024 nearly matched the final quarter of last year, when 21 of the industry's top 25 companies posted sales increases. Additionally, nine companies realized double-digit growth in the first three months of this year, which was one more than in the previous period.

We have been all wondering when/how the venture investing will bounce back from its lows over the last 2 years. Well, this report by my colleague Jeffrey Grabow and his team may be an early indicator. (Word of caution to my fellow life sciences folks as the data captures all sectors) "Take five" headlines below: 1. VC-backed companies raised $42.9 billion in Q2 2024, an increase of 29% from the $33.3 billion raised in Q1 2024. 2. AI-related companies raised 37% of total VC this quarter, more than double Q1 2024. So, no one can predict how the trend would look like in absence of the lift created by the enthusiasm for AI. 3. 25% of the total value is in life sciences vs. 18% in volume; meaning life sciences rounds have been larger than other sectors. 4. Not surprisingly due to AI investments, tech industry led the way with 49% of the value. 5. The geographic hubs with most of the VC activity were in San Fran followed by NY, Boston and LA. (all three combined were still below the VC investment in San Fran alone) So, should we get excited? Maybe. If we rely on AI only, it won't sustain as some of these early investments will fail due to the intrinsic risk in our business. My bias is that once we clear two overhangs in the macro, we will be in the clear. First is the Fed rate tapering starting on Sep 18th which shows a 99% probability as per the options chain, and the second is an uncontested election. Once we pass these two macro hurdles, there is more than enough dry powder in the system that would be looking for highly differentiated therapies in unmet medical areas.

TechCrunch shares some interesting stats suggesting that an uptick in the number of open LLM releases — competition, in other words — is pushing Gen AI vendors to slash prices, in many cases significantly. While it’s hard to tell if the downward pressure on pricing will continue, the benefits for businesses could be substantial: greater access to AI technology for organizations with smaller IT budgets and improved ROI on AI investments for organizations.
