Cordaid Kenya is currently leading a scoping study for the Rural Kenya Financial Inclusion Facility (RK-FINFA) project, benefiting smallholder farmers in four counties: Kisii, Nandi, Kakamega, and Bungoma. This initiative, funded by International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) and the National Treasury of Kenya, aims to increase access to affordable finance for women, youth, and vulnerable groups. The focus areas include Business Development Services, Financial Literacy, and Access to Finance. Ensuring access to financial products and services can enable women to save, provide nutrition and education for their children, and support their families. The benefits are real and evident. Ethiopia's current National Energy Policy falls short of addressing the specific needs and unpaid care work responsibilities of women. We urgently call for the policy to prioritize context-specific research to understand and incorporate women’s energy needs. A gender-transformative energy policy must recognize and address the distinct roles and responsibilities attributed to women and men. By providing access to clean, efficient, and affordable cooking solutions, we can significantly reduce the unpaid care burden on women, mitigate health risks, and empower them to engage more in productive roles. Member based organisations play a critical role in spearheading lobby and advocacy for their members to ensure they get good services,inclusion in service access etc. Last week Heifer International Zambia 🇿🇲 we held a women lobby and advocacy training for District Women Development Associations (DWDA) under the #womeneconomicempowermentproject funded by SIDA. The objective was to empower the Women leaders with lobby and advocacy capacity to enable them develop and submit lobby papers to their leaders as part of promoting Women inclusion.The training also incorporated a stakeholders mapping approach to understand which stakeholders exist and what services they can provide in the process of lobby and service provision.It was also clear that lobby is a give and take process and can take time depending on the gravity of the issue at hand. One of the key aspects of the lobby process is member consultation to ensure clarity and focus on issues affecting members. KEPSA JOINS THE GOVERNMENT IN FLOOD EMERGENCY RESPONSE TO AID AFFECTED COMMUNITIES The Kenya Private Sector Alliance (KEPSA), through its social arm, KEPSA Foundation, has today announced a Private Sector Flood Response Initiative to aid the affected communities during the ongoing floods. The initiative is being implemented with KEPSA members, development partners, and the government. “Our hearts go out to the families who have lost their loved ones and those who have been affected by the ongoing floods in Kenya and across East Africa. This is a difficult period for the country as we grapple with the devastating aftermaths on families, livelihoods, and businesses. We hope these concerted efforts will relieve the affected families,” Carole Kariuki, CEO, KEPSA, empathized. A report by the Red Cross indicates that as of May 2nd, 2024, the recent surge in flooding has claimed 188 lives and affected over 196,296 people, with approximately 33,100 households displaced. The heavy rains have also resulted in the loss of livelihoods, including livestock and cropland, and the destruction of businesses and industries. Damage to schools, water sources, and major roads has also been reported, as well as the high risk of an outbreak of waterborne diseases. KEPSA recognizes the urgent need for coordinated action to alleviate the suffering and provide critical support to those affected by floods. To this end, the KEPSA Foundation has issued a rallying call to mobilize private sector support for donations towards this cause under the Private Sector Flood Response Initiative. Through these associations, we're witnessing the power of collective action as #women pool their resources through saving. These self-managed groups are not only building financial resilience but also fostering a strong sense of community and support among members. How it works👉 Members contribute to a communal savings fund, which then becomes accessible for lending within the group. This enables members to invest in income-generating projects, kick-start businesses, or cover emergency expenses. By providing a platform for financial inclusion and entrepreneurship, we're paving the way for sustainable economic growth and empowerment in our communities. #InvestInWomen

👀 NEW POLICY BRIEF FOR KENYA: In this policy brief we discuss the impacts of #charcoal bans and restrictive supply-side legislations in hashtag #Kenya, highlighting how livelihood producers are disproportionately impacted by them. The brief was written by Rebecca Clube, Emmanuel Cyoy, Meron T., and Noah Mayieka. I was honored to participate in the first panel discussion at this year's FANRPAN Regional Multi-sectoral Policy Dialogue in Malawi, just immediately after the official opening ceremony. The panel focused on agriculture and food systems transformation, and I was invited to share AGRA's perspective on this issue. At AGRA, we envision food systems transformation as a comprehensive and sustainable change in the entire food value chain - from production, processing to consumption to increase productivity and income for smallholder farmers, strengthen resilience, foster inclusive markets, promote sustainable farming practices, and support government in creating an enabling environment for the private sector to thrive. I emphasized the importance of closely following the mega trends and priorities shaping Africa's food systems, including demographic, economic, environmental, and social trends. At the helm of it is the youth population bulge. This can be be achieved if there close and effective collaboration with government, development partners, private sector, and civil society. The conference offered valuable insights and learning opportunities. I look forward to applying these lessons to drive the positive change that we desire to achieve in Malawi. Job Opportunity! Food Security and Value Chain Development Expert Zambia's policy landscape is shaped by two pivotal documents: Vision 2030 (2006-2030) and the 8th National Development Plan (8NDP, 2022-2026), serving as cornerstones for all sectoral policies. Vision 2030 highlights the importance of climate change mitigation, emphasizing diversification in agriculture, and expansion of irrigation while ensuring access to renewable energy and clean water. Meanwhile, the 8NDP has three key strategic areas (Economic Transformation and Job Creation; Human and Social Development; and Environmental Sustainability). The pivotal role of sustainable agriculture in enterprise development, environmental protection and food security is clear. Agriculture plays a pivotal role in fostering Zambia’s socio-economic development and accounts for 51% of the labour force. Over 50% of the Zambian population depends on local agricultural production for food, primarily through smallholder production, however, the sector remains vulnerable to climate change which is increasing in incidence.
