This partnership will help you know how food affects your health 🥗 ŌURA (wearable ring that tracks health data) and Dexcom (continuous glucose monitoring device maker) are working together and integrating their data and biosensors so users can adjust behaviors to positively impact their #biometrics and long term health. Dexcom has also invested $75 million into Oura Series D funding round - increasing their valuation to $5 billion. Oura had stated they sold 2.5 million rings earlier this year and is predicting their annual sales to double end of this year. This partnership can help people understand the link between activity 💪, sleep 💤 , nutrition 🍲, and glucose 🍭. Our society continues to care more about our bodies and health, and I believe this will move the needle for the #holistichealth industry. There appears to be a "Superstar Effect" in healthcare and biomedical AI research right now. A small percentage of publications are truly novel methods contributions that introduce new capabilities or behaviors; whereas a majority of contemporary research publications are focused on implementation science to assess the real-world utility and performance of new methods. This dynamic seems different from prior eras, when the translational infrastructure for implementing novel AI methods was largely unavailable. While methods research often captures more attention and accolades, both types of research are critical – novel methods without implementation science lacks translatability; implementation science without novel methods lacks novelty. If our goal is to invent and deploy transformative AI methods in real-world healthcare and life sciences contexts, we ought to continue encouraging and rewarding stellar implementation science work alongside breakthrough methods development.

Great insights from David Bell, Ph.D. on the challenges of #AI in #healthcare documentation. The complexity and nuance unique to each healthcare market and the fact healthcare typically has few rote tasks but a lot of paperwork, makes it critical that #AItools be developed by experts in the industry with deep understanding of the most appropriate problems for AI enhanced tools to solve.

A whirlwind of activity last week at the America's Physician Groups conference. Lots of solid insights shared by health system leaders. Some notable thoughts: +++ Artificial intelligence is intelligent in different ways: By now, we all know ai has a diverse set of use cases, incorporated in different applications and tools. But there are fundamental differences in how the intelligence itself is brought to life. Examples include: - Predictive AI, used to forecast future outcomes by leveraging historical data. Shout out to UCLA’s CKD/ESRD early intervention protocol (Joycee Berin) and Diagnostic Robotics’ intelligence care post-dicharge journeys (Kira Radinsky) - Protocolized AI, used to automating a user’s administrative load by using a set of detailed, pre-defined rule sets. Thanks to ARC for sharing their experience using Elaborate 's automated outpatient lab summaries (Manish Naik) - Generative AI, used to create new content. Great overview of ambient documentation at MGB as well as Cedars’ Sinai talking through its medical ontology model powering acute triage (Caroline Goldzweig) Across system leaders and experts, there was clear agreement that the first step to implementing intelligence intelligently is defining the ‘jobs to be done’. That way, internal and external stakeholders are clear on what they're solving for when they architect the solution.  +++ Scaling AI takes time and rigorous observation: Market leaders describe a phased pilot approach that allows clinicians to build confidence and system leaders to measure ROI before deploying systemwide. Loved hearing Rebecca Mishuris outline MGB’s novel approach of piloting two solutions against one another, to pressure test implementation, workflow, and value creation. +++ Proving ROI continues to be challenging: Lots of vendors using lots of different metrics to prove value, but the majority of leaders agreed that estimating the ROI of these new tools today is part science, part art. Demonstrating the ROI of the “soft” metrics around provider burnout and retention seemed to be a big opportunity, especially for investment in more efficient primary care and PCP wellbeing. After all, PCPs drive referrals to specialty-level care (and higher reimbursements) for health systems. Appreciated Anurang Revri's overview of how working team setup can also impact ROI estimates. +++ Value-based care = tools + humanity: VBC will require not only implementing tools to support clinical documentation, risk capture, upcoding, etc, but also humanizing interactions to engage patients. Countless examples, but one that made me smile was a depression focused chat bot responding in the following interaction: - Context: post-discharge check in Bot: Hi Freida, how are you feeling today after your surgery?  Patient: I’m having a tough time, am in a lot of pain.  Bot: Well, it can’t be that bad, I’m sure it will get better with a positive mindset!    🤣 🤣 🤣 Can't wait for next go-around!

M13 is thrilled to lead the Series A in RadiantGraph which is focused on personalization in healthcare. As we continue to invest in early stage companies it is abundantly clear that the biggest indicator of success is the founder and his or her ability to execute on their vision of the future. In this case, I don't think I have seen much better founder-market fit than we have with founder and CEO Anmol Madan. We believe in his vision: in order to have the best patient outcomes in healthcare we need increased personalization and AI is the breakthrough to get us there. Anmol started one of the pioneering digital health companies Ginger and then was Chief Data Scientist at Livongo and Teledoc. He has done it all: early stage, late stage, public company. And he deeply understands the nuances of the healthcare market from all angles which is critical for success. While there are many players building healthcare-specific AI capabilities, RadiantGraph is focused on outcomes: The platform is already processing personalization models for more than 3.5 million people, despite launching just last year. Today’s healthcare policymakers are focused on their favorite boogeymen: physician compensation, biopharma, and new medical technologies. The real villains are ‘benefit managers’ and administrators’ who lurk in the shadows extracting 25 cents of every healthcare dollar. The reality is, in fact, in plain view if you look: administrators have grown 3200% while physicians have grown 200% over the last two decades; physician compensation is down, net of inflation. Admin comp is up, way up. PBM (pharmacy ‘benefit’ ‘management’) revenue has outstripped Pharma revenue growth in the last 20 years. Pharma extends life and improves quality of life, and extends working lives of taxpayers. PBMs - who knows… People grasp onto things they understand like doctors and drug companies. ‘Administrators’, ACOs, VBC, VBC, PBMs, spread pricing are more challenging to grasp and are allowed to obsfucate people about what they do from the shadows. Return care to the people and shrink administration and management bloat across the system. Medicare deserves this and so do the commercially ‘insured’.

What you will find: This market exists because companies like Wheel, who prioritize clinical quality and regulatory compliance in every process and product, refuse to take shortcuts. We're committed to ensuring that patients receive high-quality care—not just drive quick profits. Sometimes, choosing ethics over revenue means we don't see a short-term windfall during a "Gold Rush." But as CEO, I can assure you that it also means that patients, customers, and clinicians can trust that Wheel is always on the right side of history. I believe GLP-1s will transform healthcare as profoundly as AI, and Wheel is dedicated to being at the forefront—delivering compliant, accessible, and responsible care.

***From Best Practices to Next Practices*** Digital Health is an Emerging Determinant of Health says OCED's first-ever chapter on Digital Health in their annual Health-at-a-Glance report. Digital health readiness is considered a determinant of health as it influences health data usage, healthcare service delivery, and health outcomes through digital transformation. Countries with higher digital health readiness have better responses to health crises, improved resource utilization, lower costs, and enhanced patient experiences. Perhaps the most important point is featured in the image below, where the HUMAN FACTORS live. We have over-invested the last decade in the technologies and data systems to support Digital Health, however, we have heavily under-invested in the capacity and literacy building, community collaboration, transparent governance, and systems thinking that is required to take advantage of said technology and data. I liken it to 100 years ago, in 1924 when the automobile first arrived. At that time 95% of the world was still operating the horse and buggy, it took 40-50 years later to harness the power of the automobile to transport goods and services to every community. It's time we realize our healthcare system is the HORSE and BUGGY of this century... Latest #PitchBook data for #HealthIT investment shows a preference for later stage investment across healthIT that pre-dates the VC downturn and current interest rate environment. Even though healthIT has been more resilient to current headwinds compared to health care services and PPM plays, perhaps it speaks to a need to scale solutions and points of saturation for new entrants. "...In the lower middle market, we are beginning to see more examples of a phenomenon we have anticipated for a while: PE firms and PE-backed companies acquiring VC-backed startups. Lower-middle-market PE firms perennially complain that VC- backed companies expect too-high multiples, and these firms would generally prefer to invest on a multiple of EBITDA rather than a multiple of revenue..."
