As we recognize Friedreich Ataxia (FA) Awareness Month, I am inspired by the courage and determination of the FA community. FA is a rare and debilitating neuromuscular disorder, with symptoms typically appearing in childhood. Interesting article from #HINJ. A lot of complexity with the affordability topic - more than just passing through rebates. Multiple stakeholders can work together to lower OOP costs for patients. The simple answer is NOT just passing through rebates or just lowering prescription WAC prices. For every action there is a reaction (or unintended consequence). Join us on Wednesday, July 24 at 8:30 a.m. EDT for Mind the Gap: The Cost of Mental Health Disparities, a live discussion hosted by The Hill and sponsored by Otsuka. One in five U.S. adults live with a mental illness, yet access to treatment remains a challenge. This is especially true for lower-income individuals and minority populations who bear a disproportionate burden of both mental health and chronic conditions. According to the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI), Non-Hispanic White adults (52%) are more than twice as likely to receive treatment for a mental illness compared to Asian Americans (25%). Those numbers increase modestly among the Hispanic or Latino (36%) and Black or African American (39%). What barriers prevent racial and ethnic minority groups, as well as other marginalized, rural, and under-resourced populations, from accessing treatment? What are the unique mental health needs of racially and ethnically diverse communities? What is the economic cost of not investing in mental health services, treatments, and programs? How can we change the conversation around minority mental health to reduce stigma and encourage more integrated, equitable care? The Chamber of Commerce for Greater Philadelphia released “Leading the Way: Cell and Gene Therapy in Greater Philadelphia Sector Snapshot 2024." This in-depth report describes the Greater Philadelphia region’s remarkable growth journey in the cell and gene therapy (CGT) sector over the past decade, showcases how Greater Philadelphia has emerged as a global leader in CGT and highlights a variety of Penn’s contributions to the field. The report notes that Penn has spun out 40 companies since 2018, which has significantly contributed to the growth of the CGT sector in Greater Philadelphia. In addition, Penn Medicine was recognized as a top location for Phase I and II trials in novel cell and gene therapies and the Penn mRNA Institute recently received a $350 million investment. All of this has helped further grow the expanding CGT space in Philadelphia, which has received over $8 billion in private capital invested since 2018 and generated 7,000+ jobs.
