One of the major things we hear at SchoolforProductManagement is product managers having “imposter syndrome” at their jobs but have we ever asked ourselves why? Here are a few reasons I believe that happens 1. You never really did learn cross functional collaboration so you found yourself leading teams and you have no idea how those teams operate, think or work yet you’re trying to make decisions that affect them. 2. You’re not the rejections to your Product Manager applications. You’re not the interviews that don’t go as planned ⤵️ You’re not the unanswered messages from companies ghosting you. What you are, is the sum of your habits. The habit to move on from a bad week and still show up, over and over again. The habit to pause and ask yourself “why is this not working?” and change it. The habit to learn every day to write better, pitch better, and listen better. 🔥 So, what habit are you going to pick up today? These are my favorite job search ones: - Ignore jobs where you are not a competitive candidate. Less quantity, more quality. - Tailor everything you do for an application to that specific role. Generic is useless. - Train for interviews like you were training for the game of your life. Because you are. - Practice writing to be specific, brief, and valuable. Anything else is waste. - Get in the habit of networking and cold messaging. Every. Single. Day. 🔥 The outcome of your job search is a reflection of the habits you commit to mastering. How to accelerate your Product Manager job search (when your applications are being ignored): ➡️ If you don’t have enough experience for the roles, stop applying. Join a company in another function and transition to PM internally. ➡️ If you have the experience but still aren’t hearing back, tailor your resume and network to build relationships and get referrals. ➡️ If you’re struggling with interview questions, practice them daily using “Cracking the PM Interview” alone and with others on sites like tryexponent.com. 🔥 Remember: It’s the quality of your actions, not the number of applications, that will land you a Product Manager role.

Last month, I gave a talk at 𝗡𝗢𝗪 𝗡𝗘𝗫𝗧 𝗣𝗥𝗢𝗗𝗨𝗖𝗧 about transitioning into Product Leadership roles. Here are the key takeaways: 𝘐𝘴 𝘣𝘦𝘤𝘰𝘮𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘢 𝘱𝘦𝘰𝘱𝘭𝘦 𝘮𝘢𝘯𝘢𝘨𝘦𝘳 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘰𝘯𝘭𝘺 𝘨𝘳𝘰𝘸𝘵𝘩 𝘱𝘢𝘵𝘩 𝘪𝘯 𝘗𝘳𝘰𝘥𝘶𝘤𝘵? NO - you can make it to a career-level position like Staff Product Manager or Principal Product Manager without ever being a line-manager or being responsible for someone's career growth. 𝘞𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘴𝘩𝘰𝘶𝘭𝘥 𝘐 𝘤𝘰𝘯𝘴𝘪𝘥𝘦𝘳 𝘣𝘦𝘧𝘰𝘳𝘦 𝘮𝘢𝘬𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘵𝘳𝘢𝘯𝘴𝘪𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯? Good news! Switching to a Product Leader isn't a one-way door decision. Many Product Leaders (myself included) traverse in/out of leadership roles depending on the needs of the company, or what problems need solving. 𝘏𝘰𝘸 𝘥𝘰 𝘺𝘰𝘶 𝘥𝘦𝘤𝘪𝘥𝘦? You need to understand and consider the differences between senior-level IC Product roles and leadership roles. Specifically, you should familiarise yourself not just with the 𝗚𝗢𝗢𝗗, but the 𝐁𝐀𝐃, and the U͓̽G͓̽L͓̽Y͓̽ as well! 𝘖𝘬, 𝘐'𝘷𝘦 𝘥𝘦𝘤𝘪𝘥𝘦𝘥, 𝘸𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘥𝘰 𝘐 𝘥𝘰 𝘯𝘦𝘹𝘵? 1️⃣ - Find out if an opportunity even exists at your company. You're not likely to get your first Product Leader role by applying for an external job that involves line management if you've never done it before. 2️⃣ - Get involved with recruiting. Not just for product roles, but others you'll work with like marketing, design, and engineering. Product Leaders have to think about talent, so best to get started early. 3️⃣ - Learn how to give good feedback. Not just telling people "great job" but good, constructive, and actionable feedback--both on what went well, and where people aren't meeting expectations. 4️⃣ - Prepare for the transition, and for failure. You'll be lucky if you have a Manager who supports you in this transition, helping guide you through the new challenges you have to overcome. Find someone 𝘰𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘳 𝘵𝘩𝘢𝘯 your Manager so you have a safe space to vent and ask for guidance, mitigating the risks involved with such discussions at your workplace. And that's it!
