In April, our grantee, the Center on Reinventing Public Education (CRPE), convened over 60 state and federal policymakers, edtech innovators, school system leaders, and advocates to discuss how AI can drive meaningful, positive change in education. In a new report, CRPE highlights key insights that emerged from this convening: how AI can enable needed changes in our schools, how current conditions in the edtech market act as barriers to closing equity gaps, and how policy and practice must adapt for lasting system change.

This past spring I was invited to participate in the Center on Reinventing Public Education's AI Learning Forum. AI raises a host of questions and issues for all of us - in K12 and higher education, some good some not so much. Readers of my blog will know that I have spent quite a lot of my time and energy on these issues over the past couple of years. I really enjoyed meeting and spending a couple of days, at this forum, with a bunch of smart people, learning and talking, exploring the possibilities, challenges of generative AI. CRPE has taken these conversations and crafted a report title: Wicked Opportunities: Leveraging AI to Transform Education. The report takes a balanced view on how AI can address “wicked problems” like achievement gaps and teacher shortages, but not shying away from the challenges that of  bridging existing disparities and aligning edtech developments with student needs. In brief, the report recommends: Convene and connect cross-sector leaders to strengthen AI literacy in support of education. Seed a national education leadership strategy. Focus on the “art of the possible” to spread powerful ideas for transforming education in the age of AI. Catalyze investment in research and development for early-stage AI adoptions, innovations, and collaborations. I continue to be excited about ways emerging technologies can help unlock and accelerate talent in our schools. Center on Reinventing Public Education recently released a report documenting the summary of over 40 interviews with principals, superintendents, and other administrators who have been scaling up a range of strategic school staffing models. Some of the interesting initiatives being tested across the school systems are: ▶ Redesigned schedules and workload: Allowing schools to flex time, scheduling, and responsibilities. ▶ Redefined teacher requirements: Focus on removing barriers so that a broader range of individuals can staff or support classes, ensuring students have access to diverse, effective teachers. ▶ Collaborative teaching structures: Redesigning the role of the educator from individual contributor to a member of a teaching team, often with teachers, paraprofessionals, and specialized teachers sharing responsibility for a larger roster of students. The report highlights some of the "Big P" policy and state regulations that limit design freedom to try new approaches. But I found the list of "small p" challenges a great place to mine ideas for new tools or solutions that can enable much needed reimagining of use of talent across K12 systems. Lots of room for innovation and application of new tech to help address some of these, previously unsolved challenges. # # # 📊 District data systems: Leaders say that their technology infrastructure, like data and learning management systems, is too inflexible to accommodate the emerging needs of strategic staffing initiatives because they are typically built to track student outcome data (e.g., test scores and attendance) for a single-teacher classroom structure. They need systems that can track a broader array of data and map students to different or multiple adults. 📆 Creating a master schedule: Leaders struggle to create school-level—and in some cases, cross-school— master schedules that can accommodate teacher collaboration time or different groupings of students and teachers. 📍 Central office hiring and training processes: Leaders report that they have had to change district hiring practices to identify and recruit a wider variety of teacher candidates and/or train and mentor new teachers on their model. Depending on the system, HR staff can be more or less agreeable to these changes. ✏ School-level processes to support teaching: Leaders report that longstanding practices like how students are assigned to teachers and determining school improvement priorities can create challenges for scaling up various strategic staffing models. Institute for Higher Education Policy's 'Elevating Equitable Value' series dives into the economic outcomes of postsecondary education, revealing critical insights into how we can achieve equity in higher education. For instance, a study by Trellis Strategies highlights that a 10% decrease in financial instability during college correlates with higher economic returns. Mamie Voight, IHEP President, explains, 'By unpacking the nuances of value delivery across different contexts, this research strengthens the evidence-base showing that college is worth the investment.' Additionally, research by Frederick Tucker shows that institutions with more tenured faculty see stronger economic returns, particularly at Minority-Serving Institutions. Fostering democracy? Not exactly the mission I had in mind getting into higher ed tech. But when I joined The Chronicle of Higher Education's webinar on First-Year Student Success last week, I was amazed to see so many attendees asking about strategies for getting out the vote this fall with first-year students. Since November is less than 5 months away, here are 5 ideas that anyone can use to get out the vote with Mongoose's Cadence (or whichever messaging tool you have): 1. 🎂 DOB < 11/6/06 (Now) - Remind them they can vote this year with a link to details, whether or not they're enrolled with you yet! 2. Absentee Info Poll❓(Sep) - Find students to follow up with information on requesting absentee ballots from home with a quick "Yes/No" Smart Message 3. ^Send the Nos an ⚡️auto-reply with more details on getting registered to vote/voting locally! 4. 🏅Challenge Stats (Nov) - Send out a blast text the morning of Election Day to let everyone where to go to get their "I voted" pin to help set a new campus record. 5. It's Not Too Late! (Nov) - ⏰ Schedule a text to go out on election day in the late afternoon reminding them that polls are still open! 6. "In this paper we suggest how the current higher education landscape will require further refinement of competing interests. In addition to well documented demographic shifts, two important trends require more disciplined strategy, policy, and operations. The first is the rapid rise of lifelong learning and non-degree credentials. The second is the shift to online study—the overwhelming majority of lifelong learners, plus 71 percent of graduate and 67 percent of undergraduate students, now study partially or exclusively online."
