Kudos to Duane Highley and the team at Tri-State Generation and Transmission Association, Inc. for seizing the benefits of the #InflationReductionAct to accelerate its transition to cleaner and lower cost #renewables. Power supply to its distribution coop members will hit 50% clean next year en route to a 89% reduction in #GHG emissions by 2030 ... with new resources additions focused on #windpower, #solarpower and #batterystorage with a small amount of #gas for peaker/reliability purposes. This is very much in line with the trajectory envisaged by the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) #CleanPowerRules and shows that those rules do not force a "major" change in the industry, rather they run totally with the grain of what makes economic sense, and what is happening on the ground, while of course reducing harmful pollution at the same time. We are on track to deploy 500,000 chargers by 2026 – achieving the President’s goal four years early. - Since President Biden took office, the number of publicly-available charging ports has grown by 91% -- 184,000 public charging ports nationwide.  - Since last July, there are approximately 15,000 additional public EV charging stations with 43,000 new charging ports -- adding nearly 1,000/week. #ElectricVehicles

The bipartisan Energy Permitting Reform Act of 2024 released by U.S. Senators Joe Manchin (I-WV) and John Barrasso (R-WY) takes a much needed step in accelerating the permitting process for critical energy projects in the U.S. As the legislation spornors's state (shared here), our outdated permitting system is stifling our ability to move clean energy projects forward, which in turn has adverse economic effects and inhibits our ability to reduce emissions. I'm glad to see these bipartisan efforts are moving toward fixing a broken permitting system that has shackled American energy production for far too long. #EnergyProduction #EnergyPermitting

Carbon Markets anyone? Washington Initiative 2117, Prohibit Carbon Tax Credit Trading and Repeal Carbon Cap-and-Invest Program Measure, which would have repealed key elements of the state’s Climate Commitment Act (CCA), was rejected by voters this week. Thus, the CCA carbon cap-and-invest program remains in place. In New York, the Cap-and-Invest program (NYCI) is slowly advancing. The Citizens Budget Commission recently released their recommendations for improving the proposed rules for the state economy-wide carbon market, citing specific concerns about economic impact and feasibility of reducing GHG emissions. As large swathes of America sizzle through record temperatures this week, the Energy Institute published its annual statistical review of world energy: it makes for grim reading for people hoping to see rapid progress on the energy transition... Amanda Chu has the story Countries burnt record amounts of oil and coal last year, sending global fossil fuel consumption and emissions to all-time highs, the Energy Institute reported. Oil demand grew 2.6 per cent, surpassing 100mn barrels per day for the first time. Meanwhile, the share of fossil fuels in the energy mix declined slightly by half a percentage point, but still made up more than 81 per cent of consumption.  While EI’s estimates are largely in line with the International Energy Agency’s, its authors offer a more sombre view of the pace of the energy transition compared with the Paris-based watchdog. “Today’s new data provides little encouragement in terms of global climate change mitigation,” said Nick Wayth, chief executive of EI. “Arguably, the transition has not even started.”  Financial Times Energy Institute

Today, SWA is proud to announce our Climate Action Plan, outlining strategies that target a 50% reduction in emissions by 2030 in alignment with ASLA and IPCC goals and coinciding with COP29. Since SWA’s establishment in 1957, annual global carbon emissions have increased by over 450%. The AEC sector accounts for a staggering 40% of those emissions each year. While landscapes and open spaces contribute a proportionally smaller amount than buildings, landscape architects bring a unique toolkit for climate action—designing projects that sequester carbon, mitigate heat islands, support biodiversity, buffer sea-level rise and flooding, and center climate justice. Incorporating decarbonization strategies across the design process, SWA is developing a benchmarking analysis to measure embodied and sequestered carbon across project typologies, providing design teams with a phase-by-phase toolkit to focus on right-sizing spaces, prioritize low-carbon materials, greenline details and specifications, and more. At a broader scale, the CAP’s aim is to build a “culture of practice” empowering design teams to champion climate solutions within and beyond the firm—demonstrating the impact our field can have in the path to decarbonization. A new E3 study looks at the impact of different clean energy accounting frameworks on systemwide or "consequential" carbon emissions under voluntary clean energy purchases. The study uses E3’s California RESOLVE capacity expansion model (https://lnkd.in/giG8wYN9) to dynamically evaluate changes in system dispatch and investments over time under both annual and hourly matching approaches. We find that annual and hourly matching approaches result in similar impacts on long-run, consequential carbon emissions except under a relatively narrow set of circumstances. We also find that hourly matching will be much more difficult and costly to achieve in real life than in a capacity model context, and will expose participating customers to significant market risk due to the overprocurement that is required to match hourly demand during the most challenging hours. Finally, we conclude that long-term power purchase agreements (PPAs) will continue to be needed to finance capital-intensive clean energy projects, underscoring the important role of demand for PPAs from both the compliance and voluntary markets in facilitating clean energy development. We know we need to be investing trillions of dollars annually into the #climate transition. #Venturecapital is just a small slice of the pie, but there’s simply no time to slow down its contribution to advancing climate solutions. In 2023, however, #climatetech venture funding dropped 30% to $32 billion. Whether this was a temporary slowdown caused by high interest rates and the macro environment, or the new normal, will make a big difference. We've been thrilled to start hearing about funds that are closing new and significantly bigger rounds. One such firm is Clean Energy Ventures. That includes “grid-enhancing technologies” such as sensors that allow energy companies to send more power through existing lines without overloading them and advanced controls that allow operators to ease congestion on the grid. It also includes replacing existing lines with advanced conductors, which can potentially double capacity along existing routes. The Energy Department is currently offering $3.9 billion in funding that could go toward these and other solutions."
