So much of the conversation tends to focus on *where* and *when* we work. While important, I think we don’t spend enough time focusing on *how* we work together. At Slack we love talking about team level agreements, which help clarify the *how*. How we make decisions, how we use meetings/sync time together, how we save time for heads down/focus work, how we use tools and for what. And even more important, how do we introduce and encourage experimentation around new technologies. Our recent data shows us that 43% of desk workers have received no guidance on how to use technology like AI. AI promises to really improve how we work together, but that starts with giving people space to experiment, get their hands dirty, and get comfortable with it. I argue that mass layoffs should entail consequences for the publisher leadership (V & C suite) for their strategic/tactical failures. At minimum, no year bonus at the first occurrence. More heartbreaking layoffs at Microsoft / Activision Blizzard. Important to know: $21 Billion USD was Microsoft's gaming revenue from July 2023 to June 2024. Yet they continue laying off people (1,900 earlier this year, 650 now). This is the state of the industry. A company generates $21 Billion USD and they still the believe that more than 2,500 people should get let go. 2,550 is a number, but that represents so many individuals whose lives and the lives of their families will now be completely disrupted. From the real-life practical questions (how will the bills get paid, the fridge get fixed and important things like medication get paid?) From the emotional impact ("Will I ever find a new job?" "Was it my fault?"). Also: this is a tough job market - nobody wants to lose their job today. I don't know if it's just pure hardcore corporate greed and the pressures of trying to keep shareholders happy. But once you generate $21 Billion USD revenue, regardless of costs, you can afford to keep people on the pay roll. 1 Billion is an insane number, 21 Billion is nearly unmeasurable amounts of money Maybe t's a result of originally hiring way too many people originally and realizing they can make more than $21 Billion USD with less people. I love Xbox, I love Game Pass - it's heartbreaking to know about 650 of the people who make Xbox possible -whether they are developers, corporate roles or support roles- are getting this news and the consequences.
