As a GOOD AMERICAN customer, I can’t wait to experience the store. 👖As a former merchant, having a digital option to showcase styling, fit and product knowledge would have given me the confidence that my merchandising strategy was being executed in the store without having to physically be on location. 📺This is a great way to make sure teams are product obsessed with the constant graphics and that the visual merchandising / styling options are being showcased at the store. 🛍️To make sure this extension of digital is a success, Good American would need to keep the content fresh and consistent with real time inventory and reflective of the current product assortment. Sales associates would still need to be product obsessed but they would also need to show customers what is possible with the digital screens. The experience should augment and assist the sales associate and not be considered a replacement of staff. 🔹The excitement of finding a product on the screen, loving the look and being disappointed if the item or the size is not available could also drive customers away. Aloha Friday 🤙🏼 Here are some interesting stories from the world of retail for Friday, August 9: 💄 E.L.F. BEAUTY has blow past quarterly estimates. Sales soared to $324.5 million in its fiscal first quarter, a 50% increase. Gains in color cosmetics and skin care, and the launch of Bronzing Drops serum all helped drive growth. 👗 Capri Holdings Limited shares fell 4.75% in after-hours trading on Thursday, after the upmarket fashion group reported a 13.2% fall in first-quarter revenues to $1.07bn. 👜 Bloomingdale's has entered the resale market via an omnichannel partnership with Rebag, a resale retailer of luxury handbags and accessories. The offer will be online with a small selection in 5 physical stores. 👟 Under Armour reported fallings sales across its business, down about 10% over the prior year. However, the numbers were better than feared by Wall Street which helped push up the stock price. 👕 VF Corporation reported revenue of $1.9 billion for Q1 of its 2025 fiscal year, marking a 9% year-over-year decline. The Vans brand, which has consistently been a drag on VF’s earnings, fell 21%. 🧾 Small suppliers have complained that Saks Fifth Avenue owes them months-old debts or is paying a fractions of their invoices. A Saks spokeswoman said the company is committed to fulfilling its obligations. 🛠️ Ace Hardware has introduced a new store format called ELEVATE3. This more experiential concept is planned to be integrated into current stores as well as built from scratch. 👓 Warby Parker stock was up by about 4% Thursday after the eyewear company reported a narrower second-quarter loss as its revenue beat analyst estimates on higher gross margins. 📉 Allbirds said its Q2 net revenue plunged 26.8% year over year to $51.6 million, in part due to the closure of 10 stores during the period. Executives said new designs are performing well. 🛌 Tempur Sealy International reported a 2.8% dip in Q2 net sales to $1.2 billion. Its North American arm reported a 3.8% drop. The company says it is confident of acquiring Mattress Firm, despite a FTC challenge. 🏬 The Australia-born, digitally native trendy apparel brand Princess Polly plans to open five new US stores in the back half of 2024. The retailer opened its first US store last year in Westfield Century City, LA. 🍩 Restaurant Brands International has reported quarterly revenue that beat analysts’ expectations, fueled by better-than-expected sales at Tim Hortons and the company’s international restaurants. ✂️ Paramount Global, the storied media conglomerate, announced Thursday it will lay off 15% of its US staff and write down $6 billion in value of its cable television networks as it prepares to merge with Skydance Media. 🚴🏽‍♀️ Demand for secondhand cycling apparel is picking up speed. One of the primary aspects of the retail store leader’s role is helping associates maximize their own potential and performance. Your leadership training needs to address the issues of associate engagement and motivation. Here are four leadership best practices from MOHR Retail research that we’ve seen drive success: ▶Goals: When sharing goals, leaders should communicate both what’s “expected” (standards) and what “exceptional” looks like. The range helps associates know what’s required and what to shoot for in terms of service, sales, or procedures. ▶Communication: Every store leader needs to know to listen to the other person’s voice more than their own. Communication will feel a lot more connected and engaging to associates when they’re allowed to participate in the message. ​​▶Growth: Leaders need to develop people at all levels, not just the new people. Experienced associates want to keep learning and growing, and giving them that opportunity keeps them committed to staying with you. ▶Celebration: Celebration that is frequent and impromptu is important. Don’t just wait for the annual review or major milestones. Even small, unexpected celebrations can build confidence and enthusiasm. Don’t discount the importance of these essential interpersonal aspects. They can and should be developed as part of your store leadership training strategy. Not sure where to start? An article in The Business of Fashion on "Fashion's Golden Opportunity With Older Shoppers"... Is total and complete BS. There is an opportunity across ALL shoppers. Dividing them up by descriptors that have been used for decades is just not going to cut it anymore. While teaching fashion marketing at Fashion Institute of Technology last Fall, there were modules on generations and how they spend, how they consume information, etc. I had to add caveats to each statement in the textbook because you can't make these types of assumptions anymore. This is an old school way of marketing. We can't put customers into these buckets anymore as there are so many other data points to consider. The affluent customer shops at Walmart, Target and Costco Wholesale. The tech boom will go through another cycle and you will have more younger customers with disposable income. Resale luxury is bought by Gen Z to the boomer. Generalizing is a wasted effort and it's what gets retailers in trouble with excess inventory to irrelevant product assortments. The customer has evolved across generations and we need to stop generalizing to avoid marketers look at the data in just 1 way. #retail #retailnews #fashion #fashionmarketing #bof

Sales dipped and profits were lower for Dillard’s, whose CEO expressed disappointment in the Little Rock-based retailer’s performance. Dillard’s reported Thursday (Aug. 15) revenue of $1.514 billion in the second quarter compared to $1.597 billion in last year’s second quarter.
