During yesterday's LibreQoS APNIC webinar, I posed the question: won't more bandwidth solve these problems? As Herbert Wolverson said, yes, more bandwidth is good, but, still these problems remain if queueing is done incorrectly. Here's my take on why bandwidth alone is not as good as bandwidth + good queueing policies: Generally it was believed that 'data is important, so don't throw it away; hang on to it and send it later'. In practice, this has proven to be suboptimal as two issues may emerge: 1) latency increases for some flows due to heavy demand from other flows using the same bottleneck link, 2) even a single flow can have excessive latency due to aspects of typical TCP behavior (referred to bufferbloat) when the buffers grew large enough that the data being buffered was retransmitted anyway. It turns out that not all data is equally important. Active Queue Management is the art of deciding priorities, both in deciding what data to throw away, but also in allowing some later arriving data to be transmitted ahead of data in another connection that arrived before it. These problems have been studied, and good solutions have been found by using certain queueing policies in routers and switches, referred to as “fq_codel’ and “cake”. These track the different flows not by classifying the data, but by watching the behavior. Flows that send relatively little data (DNS lookups), or at a measured pace (video chat) have priority over flows that send a lot of data as quickly as possible (App and System updates, Video and ISO downloads).

We just concluded Embiggen X’s strategy for 2025. Big announcement below! 👇 Let's talk about the current state of GP-LP affairs: 🤯Emerging VC managers have absolutely exploded over the past 5 years. 📈 At the same time, more and more data has surfaced that shows that emerging VC firms tend to outperform larger, established firms. 🤔 All of this has made it intriguing but tough for LPs to know where to direct their attention. 🛍 GPs frequently meet LPs at conferences who are window shopping but not committed to the asset class or emerging managers. 🧾 And both crews get overwhelmed by transactional convos. So Sydney Paige Thomas and I created Abundance. Abundance is a private, nomination-based retreat for active LPs and top emerging GPs to form new experiences together and build lasting relationships. Why Abundance? Abundance is knowing that there is more than enough for more than one to succeed. And a single win within a community is a win for the community itself. The journey of an emerging VC manager from 1st close to final close or Fund 1 to Fund 2 is (1) communal and (2) requires an abundant mindset. LPs look for structure and confidence to feel comfortable investing in early VC firms. Yet many of the feeds we scroll and conferences we attend reinforce inherent power dynamics and transactional thinking, which allows scarcity mindset to creep in for emerging GPs. Listen to David Okuniev — co-founder of Typeform | Ask awesomely — discuss the challenges of innovation within existing structures. David shared a game-changing insight: Radical innovation is really, really difficult to do inside your own product. He emphasized the need to break free from the constraints of familiarity and embrace change from outside the box. Henrik Werdelin and I have both seen our fair share of this in our respective careers. What struck us most was how David leveraged structure to overcome the innovator’s dilemma. By creating a culture of experimentation and providing space for bold ideas, he propelled Typeform beyond incremental improvements. Juniper Square recently released their look back at the state of venture in Q2 2024, and the data is interesting. 👉 The liquidity drought continues to stifle fundraising, with $37.4B committed to 255 funds YTD. 👉 In the current climate, established managers are securing 77% of fund value YTD, the highest concentration in the last decade.  👉 Over 63% of capital raised in 2024 so far is in funds of $500M+, the second-highest percentage in the last decade. 👉 Q2 reflects an uptick in US venture deal momentum, with quarterly deal count climbing to the highest level since Q2 2022. 👉 Q2 data shows a third consecutive upward quarter in both exit value and the total number of exits.  👉 Q2 hit a 9-quarter high in total number of exits, and the total exit value recorded was the second-best quarter since Q1 2022. The data shows that the landscape is especially competitive for emerging managers. When it comes to generating returns though, a fresh perspective can help find the most interesting deals. As someone who played competitive tennis growing up, Roger Federer’s message at Dartmouth's commencement resonated with me and should inspire startup founders everywhere. As one of the greatest tennis players of all time, Federer pointed out that, despite his huge success in matches, he actually only won 54% of all the points he ever played. He went on to share: "When you’re playing a point, it is the most important thing in the world. But when it’s behind you, it’s behind you... This mindset is really crucial, because it frees you to fully commit to the next point… and the next one after that… with intensity, clarity and focus. The truth is, whatever game you play in life... sometimes you’re going to lose. A point, a match, a season, a job... it’s a roller coaster, with many ups and downs. And it’s natural, when you’re down, to doubt yourself. To feel sorry for yourself. And by the way, your opponents have self-doubt, too. Don’t ever forget that. But negative energy is wasted energy. You want to become a master at overcoming hard moments. That to me is the sign of a champion." When you're a founder, you're in a fierce battle every day - sometimes against competitors, sometimes against markets, and sometimes against yourself. The most successful founders accept that they'll get a lot wrong but have a mindset to adapt and bounce back from setbacks as quickly as possible. It's not about winning every point. You know I always appreciate Bill Blain’s thoughts; his recent newsletter reminded me of a wonderful New Yorker cartoon, “What Lemming’s Believe.” it is a wonderful piece of art that fits well with Bill’s recent newsletter. I do not always agree with his thinking, but I always appreciate his writing and thinking - a recommended subscription. My personal sense is that Meta and Google are terrified of what OpenAI and Microsoft are doing due to the potential impact on additional revenues (though I feel Meta and Google's reactions will eventually accelerate revenue decline as everyone will ultimately be shouting, which will mean no one will listen) - their response has been a massive investment in LLM related technology, as well as a push to give the models away (in my view) to take the oxygen out of the room for any other aspiring AI startups. Consider the parallels with Zoom. Zoom charged for video, Google’s response was to offer free video for 30 minutes, Microsoft made similiar moves with teams which they bundled in office. Meta is playing the same game with its LLM models. New entrants cannot compete with free; Meta, Google, and others will simply wait and mop up everything after the money is spent; hence, spending is a tad high right now. My personal sense is that Microsoft is very well-positioned, and I’ve never sold my stock. Why? It is a well-run and ecologically diverse company. Google and Meta are not ecologically diverse from a revenue perspective. This means that they have to fight and kill to maintain their ecological/ market niche. Any change in the environment will cause their costs to consume the host. A.K.A BlackBerry versus the iPhone. The difference per unit was a $149 dollar BES license versus no BES license for the iPhone. For a bank, that’s a $500,000 difference in license renewal cost. BlackBerry’s costs killed them, not the iPhone - specifically their Management costs. This reminds me of R. H. Donnelley (RHD), Yellow Pages; more than half a million advertisers paid $3,500 a year for space in the Yellow Pages as recently as 2006, and total circulation reached 80 million copies. The RHD CEO’s presentation to investors in March 2006 was titled “Positioned for Continued Success.” Just three years later, in May 2009, R. H. Donnelley went bankrupt. That, to me, is why Meta and Google are spending money from a gushing fire hydrant - they have one revenue source - advertising. They must kill to maintain that revenue stream; they have none to replace it. To be clear, this neither good nor bad, it simply is. Ross Haleliuk posted the fantastic article below. This is the world where I live day-to-day. At TechOperators, we invest mostly in early-stage cyber, but we do things a little differently, and we believe there are ways to invest successfully outside of pure Power Law math. The article argues that many security problems are too small for VC. I agree. I often try to convince bootstrapped founders not to raise venture because doing so can turn a successful, slow-growing bootstrapped company into a failed venture-backed company because, despite a large infusion of capital, it couldn't double every year. VC is not monolithic--not by stage, strategy, or style. Venture is often equated with "Tier 1 Venture". Ross argues that VC is not always great for early-stage cyber--and he is right. Bootstrapping AND VC work when incentives are aligned. Does it work for an early-stage VC with a <$200M fund to invest in several early companies at reasonable valuations, setting up the conditions for reasonable exits that pay off for both investors and founders? Yes. Does it work for $800M funds investing in seed stage at $100M+ valuations? Well, that depends! Power law says it does (for VC), but the unfortunate externality is that these rounds destroy companies and founder equity more often than not. There is a role for patient capital in this ecosystem to fuel successful companies that retain exit optionality as they scale--driving exit value for both founders and investors.
