Recognizing Juneteenth is not just about commemorating the end of slavery; it’s about acknowledging the true history and the long-delayed promise of freedom. Understanding and honoring this history is crucial because it helps us grasp the full scope of systemic racism, the resilience of Black communities, and the ongoing struggle for equity and justice. Wellness Wednesday: Black Women Deserve to Rest in Their Healing Process To All My Sistas: "I honestly believe we’re so accustomed to delivering the strong Black woman speech to ourselves and everyone else that we lose our ability to connect to our humanness, and thus our frailty. We become afraid to admit that we are hurting and struggling, because we fear that we will be seen as weak. And we can’t be weak. We’ve spent our lives witnessing our mothers and their mothers be strong and sturdy, like rocks. We want to be rocks." (Pickens, Ebony 2016) My Sistas, we are losing our Grandmothers, Mothers, Aunties, Sisters and Friends because they were told to be strong and sturdy. Unfortunately, they were not told what the consequences of being strong All the time would have on their Health and Well-being and shorten their Life Span. High blood pressure =stroke, heart attack, kidney failure, maternal complications and mortality. Diabetes =kidney disease, obesity, infections, loss of limbs and Blindness. Stress=mental/emotional illness, high blood pressure, pain, digestive concerns, weak immune system and cancer. The strong Black woman trope creates unrealistic expectations about what We should have to endure. Sometimes the "Mental obligation", can convince Black Women to accept whatever struggle comes with their Health, including pain, physical abuse, or neglect. BW4HL care about the Health and Well-being of Black Women and We do not want them to accept dysfunctional relationships with their Healthcare providers. Black Women fall over backwards, to care for everyone else but deny their own Health needs. No one should have to tie themselves into knots to keep their illness and health conditions a secret. We have to change the narrative so that Black Women are encouraged to share their stories. We can do this by assuring them that their illness is nothing to be ashamed of and lift the sense of burdensome. My Sistas, you deserve to rest during your healing process on your Health Journey. You may ask; Why does this matter? We know that some of our Black Women struggle in silence. Yesterday was Crown Act Day, and I was overjoyed to see so many posts celebrating the beauty and diversity of Black women's hair in professional spaces on my timeline. 💁🏾‍♀️ The Crown Act, which stands for "Creating a Respectful and Open World for Natural Hair," was first enacted in California on July 3, 2019. This landmark legislation ensures protection against discrimination based on hair texture and protective styles such as locs, braids, twists, and knots. As someone who proudly wears her bright red locs, it's empowering to witness our community showcasing their authentic selves at work. The Crown Act is not just about hair—it's about dignity, identity, and the freedom to be our true selves in all aspect of our lives. While this policy is based in the US, there are some valuable lessons for the UK to take away. Embracing and protecting the natural hair of Black professionals is essential for fostering true inclusivity and representation in the workplace!
