Venture capital exists to capitalize and create hallmark entrepreneurial business building stories, and this one, from Eric Tarczynski, Founder of Contrary, one of the earliest investors in Indian commerce start-up Zepto, is one of those outstanding stories and a must-read below! The growth and progress of this Indian start-up are truly remarkable, especially given it was only founded in 2021! Zepto recently raised $665 million in a new round of funding, more than doubling its valuation to $3.6 billion from $1.4 billion in less than a year, as the #Mumbai-based startup doubles down on its efforts to capture the contested quick commerce market in #India. US-based Glade Brook Capital Partners LLC, Nexus Venture Partners and StepStone Group co-led the “highly-oversubscribed” Series F round. Avenir, Lightspeed India and Avra (former Y Combinator Continuity exec Anu Hariharan’s new fund) as well as existing backers Goodwater, Lachy Groom and Contrary followed. It is clear that US investors are still active and keen on the India start-up market. The startup said its revenue has risen 140% from a year earlier, and its annualized gross merchandise value (GMV) is on track to exceed $1 billion. It works with more than 50,000 delivery partners and is adding over 5,000 delivery partners each month. The company said about 75% of its dark stores were EBITDA positive as of last month. 🎙️ Cohort talks: fundraising masterclass with Arjit Johri (VP, Mars Shot Ventures)🚀 We hosted Arjit for a no-nonsense chat on fundraising last week. Key insights: 1️⃣ Perfect the pitch: master multiple versions—1-minute, 5-minute, 15-minute, and a detailed deck. 2️⃣ Follow-up: keep potential investors engaged with strategic updates and progress. 3️⃣ Rejection isn’t final: when it comes to investors, a “no” today doesn’t mean never. Maintain relationships, keep them in the loop. This advice echoes what my YC mentors shared during my own fundraising journey. What stood out for you? As private markets secondary strategies increasingly raise and deploy capital globally, India, one of the larger and more liquid markets, with increasing foreign and domestic private market interest, is primed for secondary market investments from global, Asian-regional and what I see as more India-focused secondary fund managers, across venture capital through private equity. GP-led deals have also increased, with global players such as Pantheon, Neuberger Berman, StepStone Group, HarbourVest Partners, Adams Street Partners, CF Private Equity, Schroders Capital, AlpInvest Partners all executing or evaluating India deals. That being said, we are still seeing challenges in liquidating positions with many of the India funds raised between 2005 and 2011, where performance as well as heavy currency devaluation have impacted saleability. Who are the players you see active in the LP secondary market in India? Who will raise India-focused secondary funds for VC and PE? It’s critical to determine the right product pricing strategy from the get-go by keeping in mind the eventual unit profitability! 🙌 Shoutout to Sajith Pai and Madhav Chanchani for highlighting this important pitfall for startups. Setting initial product pricing too low for consumers, may result in a *perceived* PMF, but it can lead to trouble down the road. If you are forced to increase your product’s pricing to achieve unit profitability, it could result in the entire customer segment itself changing! This becomes a massive problem since you would need to start your PMF journey for this higher segment all over again! We are seeing this in late stage venture companies all the time. This issue is particularly challenging in emerging economies like India, where lower GDP per capita makes consumers much more price sensitive than places like the US, China etc. We need to coin a new term PMUEF (Product-Market-Unit Enomics Fit) instead of just PMF for India! 🙏

I’ve been building and operating #startup #ventures for 20+ years and even when the product, market, or timing is off, a topnotch #team figures out what to change and how to win. A closeup view of how the best founders and execs make the most of their people #talent through our work at Hunt Club: 👉 At every company, only 1 or 2 people truly have the passion, time, and influence to actively develop their existing people and build a strong pipeline of new talent. 👉 For key roles, there's a very long list of 200-300 candidates today (up from 100-150 just 5 years ago. The more senior the position, the more likely that a warm intro through a trusted connection is needed. 👉 Finding the perfect fit is increasingly narrow. If a company has just one profile for a key hire, they either need to get lucky or expand archetypes. Otherwise, the search extends by another 30-80 days. ❓ And a new one - does #AI help or hurt things? With generative AI, there's been an explosion of well-written, but soulless outreach. Over the years, we at GFR Fund have solidified our investment thesis, which is that we invest in "emerging digitally native communities." These communities can be built around games, social media, and any consumer applications. Now, founders have many easy-to-use tools to build user communities, such as Discord, X/twitter, Instagram, etc, and we believe the founders should start building communities even before they launch a product. The communities can help founders: - reach PMF faster - acquire users cheaper - retain and engage users longer - build better UX/UI, and - hire early employees Below, you can see how RTFKT and Omeda Studios built the community and then worked with them to create a product the users really wanted. We would love to talk to the founders who think the community is essential in building a product!
