As we move into election week in the United States, Devaka Premawardhana, MDiv ’05, writes on common uses of the term "tribalism" in American politics to describe the increasing distrust and animosity based on political identities, and describes how Indigenous groups characterized as "tribes" across the world are rarely as polarized as this mainstream rhetoric leads us to believe. Drawing from his own research working with the Makhuwa of Mozambique, Premawardhana says that this misunderstanding of "tribalism" not only divides us further but "miss[es] a chance to draw from indigenous wisdom—'tribal' wisdom—insights into how better to live in pluralistic communities." Anti-trans sentiment has existed for a long time, but it seems like we're at a moment of particularly intense attacks. Why is that? In 2023 alone, more than 500 anti-trans bills have been proposed or adopted in nearly every state in the United States, targeting everything from drag performances to gender-affirming medical care to school inclusion policies for trans people. Support for these measures has been enabled and propelled by scientific misinformation, which has proven to be a distressingly effective tool in outraging a public that might otherwise be broadly empathetic, or at least uncertain about where to stand. The Meta Oversight Board has proposed a review of Facebook’s policies on “misgendering” and “hate speech,” apparently poised to ban “misgendering” across Meta’s platforms. The case centers around two videos on men in women’s spaces. According to Independent Women’s Forum, which appears to have been targeted by the proposed ban, the first video was a woman expressing discomfort with a trans-identifying male in a women's bathroom. The other features a male winning a women's athletic competition. If the Oversight Board decides to ban these videos, this will mean that correctly stating the sex of trans-identifying males and disapproving of males in women's spaces qualify as “Bullying and Harassment.” Take Action! NEW: PEN America’s latest Freedom to Write Index finds that at least 339 writers were held behind bars in 33 different countries during 2023, reaching a 5-year high. Increased crackdowns on speech and dissent during war put Russia and Israel in the top 10 jailers of writers for the first time. China, Iran, Saudi Arabia, and Vietnam continued to top the list. In its fifth edition, the report analyzes trends in the number of writers unjustly jailed since 2019. The global total has steadily increased, as many writers are jailed year after year and new writers are targeted. The number of women jailed has notably risen since 2022. The report also highlights the words of unjustly jailed writers, including the 2024 #FreedomToWrite honoree Pham Doan Trang, who wrote, “I want something greater; freedom for Vietnam...it’s totally possible—with your support.” PEN America calls on governments to release all writers unjustly imprisoned, and urges the international community to recognize the crucial role of writers in society by supporting their freedom to write and protecting those at risk.
