Addressing the Aviation Maintenance Technician Shortage: A Crucial Step for the Industry’s Future The aviation sector is on the road to recovery post-pandemic, but a significant challenge persists: a shortage of aviation maintenance technicians (AMTs). Current estimates suggest a shortfall of 12,000 to 18,000 AMTs, which could persist or even worsen over the next decade. Factors like an aging workforce, low career uptake, and rising passenger demand (IATA predicts 8.2 billion passengers by 2037) are contributing to this gap. Boeing’s 2021 Commercial Market Outlook indicates that 610,000 new AMTs will be needed globally through 2041, with the trade association ADS saying that there are currently 10,000 vacancies in the UK alone. To meet this demand, the industry must increase the number of trained AMTs by at least 20% above those already being trained. Strategies to address this could include: ✈️ Increasing financial compensation: Making the role more attractive by acknowledging the high skill and training required. ✈️ Diversifying recruitment efforts: Expanding marketing to underrepresented groups (currently, <10% of aviation and aerospace engineers are female, for example). ✈️ Mentorship programs: Leveraging the experience of current professionals to guide and inspire the next generation. 📢 IAM/Boeing Contract Proposal 2024 Update: Boeing has presented an updated contract proposal for its membership, which the IAM union leadership has endorsed and is recommending to members for consideration. This offer includes several significant enhancements from previous agreements: A 38% General Wage Increase (GWI) over four years, structured at 13%, 9%, 9%, and 7%, resulting in a total increase of 43.65% across the contract. A $12,000 ratification bonus that can be allocated as a paycheck contribution, directed to a 401K, or a combination of both—allowing flexibility for members. Union leaders recognize this offer as a pivotal outcome of the recent strike efforts and recommend it as a strong next step for members. Omni Federal is pleased to announce a recent award to lead the development of SOCOM’s Enterprise Training Marketplace within Digital University. SOCOM recognized a need for a comprehensive, secure, and user-friendly marketplace where SOCOM units can easily explore, select, purchase, and manage approved training from reputable vendors. Speed, convenience, and flexibility are the three core principles of this simplified procurement process. SOCOM requires an Amazon-like platform with automated procurement features that can be easily changed and adapted to meet evolving mission requirements. This single mission-enabled platform will allow users to acquire the necessary training needs of Joint Special Operations Command (JSOC), Theater Special Operations Commands (TSOCs), Special Missions Units (SMUs), and SOCOM service components. We leveraged a deep understanding of SOCOM’s distinct enterprise training requirements to conceptualize a unique SOCOM Training Marketplace design within Digital University. Our initial focus is to create a streamlined user interface and enhance the user experience for effortless navigation through the extensive pool of 100+ SOCOM-specific vendors. To capture SOCOM stakeholder needs, Omni is applying our commercially proven Human-Centered Design process adapted to meet the mission and security needs of DoD agencies. Our scope of work includes integrating an easy-to-use and streamlined procurement process, initially developed, and validated by the Digital University Program Team to expedite the acquisition of training resources. The specific and unique SOCOM Training Marketplace procurement process seamlessly aligns with the well-defined and strategically crafted set of Digital University acquisition stages, enabling integration of the two to meet specific training requirements established by the SOCOM enterprise. The Davis-Monthan AFB Federal Aviation Airframe and Powerplant (A&P) course is now operational. It is amazing to see a program a few of us started coming to fruition. We began with a simple idea, aiming to give back to the Airmen! This program is designed to deliver high-quality, efficient training that creates Mission Ready Airmen and equips servicemen and women with critical skills and a lifetime certification, enhancing their career readiness both within and beyond military service. Our goal is to streamline this training course across all Air Force installations and establish a foundation for a centralized location. The biggest question is: what is the Return on Investment (ROI) for the Air Force? This course is designed to provide instant ROI in the form of Mission Ready Airmen. In our next fight, we will employ the lowest footprint ever seen before. This course and the A&P license give our maintainers the skills to work on any aspect of aircraft maintenance, making us a more lethal force. The long-term ROI can range from recruiting/retention benefits to Contractor Logistic Support savings. What we have accomplished: - Created a 2-week course, free of cost to the members. No permissive TDY/personal expenses and no AF COOL! - Obtained FAA certification to proctor all FAA written testing free of cost. - Acquired a Cessna 172 aircraft from the USAFA Aeroclub as a training aid. - Developed step-by-step procedures for any base to implement. Please reach out if any maintenance unit is interested! Next steps: - Established a working group with the CCAF JSAMTCC to stand up a centralized location for all maintainers to attend. They have been working on this idea, and our course will provide the data they need! - Add a CCAF Qualification Training Package (QTP) class to alleviate all FAA prerequisites to attend the course. Members join us, November 14 at 7pm ET for our quarterly Associates Town Hall on “Managing the Pressures of Spaceflight” with guest speaker: Dr. Michael Harrison. As commercial spaceflight opportunities increase in volume, a wider range of non-traditional astronauts will engage in spaceflight activities that have only ever been performed by professional astronauts. This includes living and working for a prolonged period in a microgravity environment in an orbiting space station or on the surface of a celestial body with the possibility of engaging in extravehicular activities (i.e. spacewalks). Human spaceflight support requires an understanding of hyperbaric and hypobaric medicine and barometric factors have contributed to a number of spaceflight events that resulted in lessons learned through either a near miss or a catastrophic event. As commercial companies develop space suits, perform EVAs on their missions, and build space stations, understanding the historical lessons learned and looking towards the future opportunities is vital in creating safe industry practices. An Inspection Authorization (IA) allows Airframe and Powerplant (A&P) maintenance technicians to perform and approve annual inspections and sign off major repairs and alterations on aircraft. To be eligible for renewal of an inspection authorization for a 2-year period, an applicant must present evidence during the month of March of each odd-numbered year that the applicant still meets the requirements of § 65.91(c) (1) through (4). Advanced Aircrew Academy has several modules approved in accordance with FAA Order 8900.1 Volume 3, Chapter 56 that can be used towards the minimum eight (8) unit Credit Hour IA Renewal requirements! Did anyone ever doubt the NGAD program would run into cost, schedule and performance issues? That's unfortunately part of doing business with the JCIDS/POM/DoD Acquisition process. The crime was using NGAD and CCAs as an excuse to gut the fighter force. Existing fighters are expensive to fix and fly and keep relevant. But in their static capabilities, our existing fleet with enough money to train and let operators hone their skills is still the best in the world, bar none. We have focused on tech instead of tactics and talent way too much. We need tech, but more we need trained talent willing and able to execute violently when needed. Until we scrap the JCIDS and POM process that instead of discipline and predictability gives us Star Trek dreams, cost overruns and a gutted force, the DoD would do well to return to tactics, training, and tenacity. I've never seen a war won with a glossy or a Powerpoint filled with promises to save lives, but I have seen $Billions spent on both to the detriment of readiness across the board.

The 2024 Defense Acquisition Workforce Writing Awards recognize original ideas and innovative approaches to tackling challenges and implementing acquisition flexibilities. The award winners showcased exceptional skill in enabling acquisition and achieving the goals set out in the National Defense Strategy (NDS) and were awarded at the event. “I’ve never seen a defense strategy that had so many phrases that tell you we need to do things differently,” noted DAU President Jim Woolsey. “Organizations don’t change easily,” Woolsey remarked. However, the acquisition community must innovate and adapt to address new challenges arising from the evolving global environment, near-peer competitors and rapid technological advancements. DoD has received “massive wake up calls” with lessons learned from evolving conflicts. These awards highlight the value Congress places on the workforces’ innovative ideas. The winners received their awards and presented their publications to program management students and guests during a ceremony at DAU on June 12, 2024. All of these fuel values, hoses, thrusters are ALL potential points of failure. Each a liability (safety). In #space - not a good thing to trouble with. One major/minor fuel-line pressure/ pressurization or thruster issue and your entire craft is at risk! Those gimble points via RCS are ALL needed to orient your craft/attitude for reentry trajectory as well. Our future advanced #CTPcraft will NOT require RCS (sub)systems, monitoring systems, installation, thruster pods, thruster hose/lines, valves, fittings, flanges, or the weight or space required that could be dedicated to other ship's systems. ASTM International’s general aviation aircraft committee is currently developing a standard to guide endurance testing of flight control systems for small airplanes. The standard will establish guidelines on when testing should be conducted, and various other factors like pass/fail criteria, environmental conditions, and more. “Flight control system endurance tests are used to evaluate proper function after repeated cycles under load (and resulting wear) that could be expected to occur in service,” notes ASTM International member David Fairback. “These tests provide confidence that safety-critical features that could potentially degrade due to wear will continue to function throughout their expected life.” https://lnkd.in/emDziGHk #aviation #aircraft #airplanes

Delta Air Lines receives the first FAA approval to use drones for aircraft maintenance inspections. Delta TechOps will initially deploy semi-autonomous drones to inspect planes after lightning strikes, improving safety for technicians and reducing return-to-service time by up to 82%.
