I've attended numerous meetings where someone displays a table full of numbers and states, "As you can see, there's an increasing trend..." At that moment, I find myself staring intently at the screen, almost to the point where my eyes👀 bulge, as my brain shifts into high gear⚙️ trying to discern the alleged trend. After a strenuous few minutes, during which my brain feels like it's running a marathon, I finally grasp the information. However, by then, I'd missed a significant portion of the presenter's subsequent points while I was lost in the numbers. Opps… 😬 Can anyone relate to this experience? I wish people would recognise how taxing it is for our brains to process raw numbers. To effectively digest large amounts of data, we need to visualise our data. And no, simply presenting data in a table through a visualisation tool like Tableau is not data visualisation. So, what exactly is data visualisation, and why is it so crucial? Data visualisation involves converting data into a graphical format, such as charts, maps, or other visual representations, making trends, patterns, and anomalies more immediately apparent. These visual formats allow us to quickly see insights that might be challenging to grasp through tables alone. This efficiency stems from our dominant sense of vision—about 7️⃣0️⃣% of all sensory receptors are in the eyes. If we think of our senses as information highways, our visual sense is a ten-lane freeway, touch is a one-lane road, and taste is a mere dirt path. If you’re not convinced, consider the example below. Now, I’m not saying that tabulated data aren’t necessary. It has its place. It is beneficial and necessary for detailed data review, where precise values are required or when the dataset is small and simple. Have you ever had 2 versions of a spreadsheet you need to compare but want a bit of help with automating the task? 🤔🤓📊 Microsoft has a tool called Spreadsheet Compare under its Microsoft Office Tools collection. If you upload both spreadsheets you can pick and choose what you wish to compare such as value cells, formula cells and calculated cells and it not only lists the changes by type, cell and sheet but as you select a change both spreadsheets navigate to the referenced cell. You can export the list of changes too. In the below example I have created 2 dummy datasets. The first with 4 months of values and the remainder months with a forecast.ets(). The second set wraps an if() around the forecast.ets() to check for negative forecasts, zeroises and highlights them. Then manual inputs override some of the zeros. I can see how many cells changed, what the changes were and also the overall impact in the chart. I have a Personal Office 365 subscription with Power BI Desktop license added in and the Spreadsheet Compare tool is included. Reposting to my network. I know those of you with full time roles are busy - maybe busier than you have ever been as companies lay-off and try to do more with less… But take a moment to think about- really ponder - how you would feel, what your life would be like, how your family, your psyche, your confidence would be impacted if your company “cut your role”, and you went went 674 days without another job, hitting up every colleague, every “friend”, every recruiter…applying for hundreds, maybe 1000+ jobs over that time. Hearing back only 10% of the time with any answer at all - and the rest a brief “no”, with no feedback, no reasoning… I don’t know Peter, but I have felt this feeling. And while many of you cannot imagine what this feels like, I beg you to spend 40 minutes this week thinking about anyone you know that is t working right now but wants to - promote them on LI, promote open roles on LI - spend 20 minutes doing something good for those you may need at some point.

I’ve decided to forever have a one-year resume gap. And it’s something we need to talk about. I just finished a 10-month sabbatical. What prompted the decision was a desire to focus on improving my communication skills so I can be more effective in my next role. But I also wanted to take time out of my industry bubble and interact with life outside of work in a more intentional way. Including thinking about how I could drive even more positive patient outcomes through my work. I’m aware that this might mean delaying my professional advancement and that I might always face the dreaded resume-gap stigma. And I’m okay with that. But here’s the problem. I am immensely fortunate: — My boss was supportive — I had the means to not work for a year — I knew I wouldn’t lose my role when I got back What about people who are not in that position? People who: — Need to care for a loved one — Get burned out and need time to recover — Suffer from illness that requires prolonged care In other words, mine was voluntary. Most resume gaps aren’t. Which brings me to my point: It’s 2024. Not only should we eliminate the resume-gap stigma once and for all. But we should start moving in the other direction— Actively supporting those who take time off.

409A! Sounds like gibberish but if you're running a US company or have US taxpayers as employees, you should learn about how this works (the 409A is the report and process for pricing stock options in your company, it references the part of the IRS code relating to this). It answers the question: what strike price should we put on our options on common? Standard industry practice is that common options are priced at a discount to the preferred. While early stage startups were more aggressive a few years ago, with common priced at 10% of the preferred price, these days the median is a more conservative ~ 30%. Note that's 30% OF the preferred price, not 30% OFF OF the preferred price, despite the use of the word "discount". So if the valuation of your preferred round is $20 million pre money, then the 409A would typically price your common options at a price per share that works out to be $6 million for the company. Note also that this benefits from generating a report and analysis from an expert. It has a major impact both on tax (including notable, the tax of the options recipient) and on the company being able to produce audited financials. In my experience, companies like Carta or Pulley will do a 409A for you usually at around $3,000, and if you can get a big accounting firm to do it, they might charge $25,000+. Some specialist companies (I found one called Eqvista with 30 seconds on google) could be under $1,000. Several providers are promising 5 day turnaround. Bigger firms may take longer, even though the process is fairly straightforward (as long as the startup has things like a built out financial model and 5-year financial forecast). There's a theory behind this (preferred shares have a number of benefits common shares don't). The net effect is to try to provide incentives for people taking risk with you.
