Emissions Accounting is needed to help us beat climate change, said Gavin McCormick from WattTime.org during a conference on "Emissions Accounting to Accelerate Decarbonization" by the Institute for Policy Integrity at NYU School of Law. Corporations embark in different decarbonization trajectories that often involve significant investments for developing newer and cleaner technologies. Emissions Accounting can ensure that the investments are delivering in the desired decarbonization outcomes. It also should enable corporations to disclose the environmental benefits of their investments. This is much easier said than done. 🌲 Example: the impact of investing in renewable energy in West Virginia is three times most impactful than investing in renewables in California. However, disclosure frameworks today are based on measuring investments in renewable energy in MW hours rather than emissions. We need to get emissions accounting right, to ensure we achieve our decarbonization goals. Our team has been diligently crunching numbers to shed light on the landscape of corporate sustainability efforts, particularly focusing on companies engaging with offset projects. 1️⃣ Diverse Participation: Among the standout findings is the diversity of companies investing in carbon offsets. We've identified approximately 2258 unique and well-known companies that have made purchases through Verra, emphasizing the widespread adoption of carbon offsetting practices across industries. 2️⃣ Project Diversity: Notably, around 856 of these companies have demonstrated a commitment to environmental stewardship by investing in multiple projects. This indicates a strategic approach to offsetting, with companies seeking to diversify their impact across various initiatives. 3️⃣ Scaling Impact: Digging deeper, our analysis reveals that a significant portion—approximately 2159 companies—have not only engaged with multiple projects but have also bought multiple offsets. This underscores a proactive stance toward mitigating carbon footprints and driving meaningful change. 4️⃣ Strategic Investments: Delving into the numbers, we found that, on average, companies purchasing from multiple projects tend to spread their investments across 4-5 initiatives. ICYMI: New York Climate Week 2024 showcased the voluntary carbon market as a crucial tool for financing climate action, particularly through its inaugural VCM Day. Buyer challenges and participation in the VCM were major topics in Climate Week, which included discussions around the need for evolving standards and more action in addressing value chain emissions. Corporations continue to face scrutiny in their decarbonization and offsetting strategies, leading to downward pressure on demand from elevated levels of risk and uncertainty. Participation has also been impacted by corporations facing an evolving policy landscape, highlighted by SBTi’s Scope 3 Offsetting standard and disclosure regulations such as the Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD). While these short-term challenges are expected to persist, Climate Week may contribute to settling some of that uncertainty by providing a forum to facilitate discussion and improve transparency. 💡In the latest Policy Primer, a working group of Carbon Business Council member companies and partner organizations outline the rationale for implementing demand-support policy for CDR: https://lnkd.in/gHDzGCXu ✅ Demand from the VCM is still lagging; therefore, policy advancement is needed to provide demand support for the full portfolio of CDR solutions required to meet our climate goals, including from compliance markets. 📈 Economic development - CDR has been widely forecast to grow to a trillion-dollar market by midcentury. 🌡️ Climate mitigation - the world is not currently on track to meet the goals of the Paris Agreement and limit warming to 1.5 or even 2°C — it is imperative that policymakers globally, and at every level of government, act now in order to leave future generations with a livable climate. 🌲 Co-benefits - many CDR approaches can potentially deliver significant agricultural, ecosystem, social, and economic co-benefits. ❇️ Market shaping - implementing demand-side and other supportive policies will establish clear climate leadership and have an outsized influence on shaping the future of CDR.
