Regardless of your associations with Freud, the truth is that there are some fundamental insights generated from the body of work that dovetail exquisitely with neuroscience, social neurobiology, trauma informed therapy, attachment theory, and somatic work. Mark Solms is a rare integrative psychoanalyst, who engages with contemporary science. In my view, these insights are part of what our existential crisese truly need right now. Innovative insights with concrete tools into how humans confront hard and complex truthes. Recommended.

We know so many mental health treatments are developed on a very similar type of family: White, middle class, with access to many resources. So it makes sense that when these treatments are delivered to a more diverse audience, they might need some *tweaking* in order for families to resonate with treatment and get better. That *tweaking* (and sometimes overhauling!) is what my research is all about. My research answers the question of "how do we make evidence-based mental health treatments better for families of color, especially Black families?" Recent research shows that mindfulness practices can improve brain health and memory in childhood trauma survivors —the study found that mindfulness training can lead to beneficial neural changes, particularly in the hippocampus, enhancing memory and cognitive function in those affected by childhood adversity. THE STUDY: The study was broken into 20 participants in the MBI group and 19 in the Stress Management Education (SME) control group, and used anatomical MRI and performance on the Mnemonic Similarity Task (MST) to assess changes in hippocampal volume and memory. THE RESULTS: Only the MBI group showed enhanced pattern separation capability in the MST, linked to stress reduction and subiculum volume changes.
