A wide broadband terahertz spectrometer was used to illustrate unique applications of terahertz spectroscopy as an analytical tool. Following a brief discussion on spectrometer calibration, illustrative examples are outlined for a chemical compound from the Department of Homeland Security, nanoparticles with ligand, and contamination in gasoline. It was found that the technique is suitable for interrogating molecular motions that are not easily visible by other methods such as UV, infrared, or Raman spectroscopy.

Spectroscopy is the tool of choice for investigations of molecular structures. Probing molecular properties such as resonances is the key for a number of real-world applications including sensing, detection, identification, and diagnostics. Recently, scientists have been increasingly confronted with the term "terahertz spectrometry," which is not commonly found in the standard spectroscopy textbooks, nor does it appear in the classical molecular spectroscopy bible by Gerhard Herzberg (1). There are terms such as "far-infrared spectroscopy" or submillimeter waves that have been used in the literature for portions of the electromagnetic spectrum implying a part of the terahertz region.

  • Diffusion Kinetics and Permeation Concentration of Human Stratum Corneum Characterization

    Drug Development and Delivery

Terahertz reflectometry and spectrometry was used to investigate the permeation kinetics and concentration profile of active ingredients into the stratum corneum (SC). To our knowledge, this is the first effort of direct, non-invasive and real-time measurement of kinetics and concentration gradient of analytes into the SC. Moreover, this is a general method that is applicable to any substrate and analyte combinations. It was found that the analyte concentration in the SC of 1% hydrocortisone…

It was found that the analyte concentration in the SC of 1% hydrocortisone solution in propylene glycol is significantly higher than 1% caffeine in deionized water. These findings are important for quantifying transdermal drug delivery formulation with these solvents and can be extended to other analytes and solvents. Terahertz spectra of untreated SC versus those treated with a 10 mM N-0915 solution were distinctly different. Additionally, the N-0915-treated specimen exhibits prominent absorption peaks in the 7.27 THz, 11.88 THz, and 18.42 THz region, while the spectrum of blank specimen exhibits a monotonous increase of absorbance with frequency. This indicates the importance of broadband terahertz spectroscopy of a range of 20 THz or more to be able to probe molecular events.

  • Dendrimer based terahertz time-domain spectroscopy and applications in molecular characterization

    Journal of Molecular Structure

Electro-optic Dendrimer is used to generate milliwatts of terahertz power by difference frequency
method. A terahertz time-domain spectrometer (THz-TDS) has been designed around this source that exhibits wide broadband terahertz range, ?0.1 to 35 THz. Examples of molecular characterization are discussed for three common explosives and the vibrational states of Fullerenes. The explosives’ spectra are unique for each explosive that allow detection and identification of the species. The…

The Fullerenes C60 and H2@C60 also exhibit distinctively different spectra and absorbance states indicating that the THz-TDS is suitable for probing increased number of vibrational states expected from molecular vibrations.

Start-up and small businesses are a major source of economic growth within the Pacific Rim countries and scientific, technology, and engineering advances in the commercial sector are measured by their utility in the broader, world-wide community. This session will provide perspectives on the challenges, excitement, and do-overs that are inherent in launching and driving growth in the commercial sector. Speakers will address (1) practical tools for small business owners, including intellectual property protection, licensing, technology transfer, capital formation, strategic planning, partnership/alliance/marketing strategies to commercialise opportunities domestically and internationally; and (2) narrative stories from principals in the chemical, high-tech materials, energy, pharmaceutical/bio-tech, and analytical instrumentation sectors, revealing their experiences regarding innovation, perseverance, competition, and overcoming market barriers. Limited investment capital, infrastructure resources, and personnel experience create market barriers for start-up and small businesses when seeking and securing customers, clients, and contracts; attempting to conduct business in foreign countries compounds the issues. Successful small businesses have determined how to leverage their entrepreneurial skills to overcome the barriers that exist with large, established competitors. Small entities are characteristically nimble, innovative and accept a higher level of risk. This session will provide perspectives for building entrepreneurial success.
