🧬 This week's Austin Bio + Health Roundup highlights significant data trends, my stance on covering funding announcements, new partnerships, and action across the Texas Bio Triangle. 🧬 💰 Funding: The Way I Plan to Cover Funding Announcements You may have seen reports of a local Bio & Health startup’s funding round through an SEC report filing. While some outlets have covered this, my position is not to. I prefer to support our builders directly rather than trolling the filings for scoops. There is plenty of real investigative journalism that our city would be well served by if that is where they focused. Remember I am not a journalist and I am not the media. When the company is ready to announce their round officially, I’ll gladly shout it to the rooftops. 📊 Data Peter Walker at Carta reports that in 2017, Biopharma and Medical Devices captured just under 10% of all VC dollars. By 2023, this figure rose to 17.7%, and in Q1 2024, it reached 24%. The overarching tailwinds favor our sector and region with trends towards Bio & Health and the physical & digital intersection. Energy and hardware, two other sector blossoming in Central Texas, also saw similar share gains. 🤝 M&A and Partnerships Sensi.AI, a 24/7 senior care intelligence agent, is partnering with Caring Senior Service to deploy SensiAI’s platform in Caring’s 50 locations across the US. This partnership allows seniors a better opportunity to age gracefully in their homes. 🚩 Texas Bio Triangle BioMedSA is hosting an event called Women in Bioscience, Thursday June 20th. I'm happy to announce our investment in OnSight Technology! OnSight’s robotics platform helps solar operators scale without additional headcount; improves operations, maintenance and safety; and stops fires before they happen! Feedback from their customers is among the best I’ve ever heard 🤖☀️ Some of the macro tailwinds that make this timely:  🔋 Utility-Scale Solar: Large-scale projects, often spanning hundreds of acres, are becoming a cornerstone of renewable energy strategies worldwide. In the US, utility-scale solar grew by over 20% in 2023, and there is a massive backlog of new projects planned or waiting for grid connection. 🏠 Commercial/Rooftop Solar: On the smaller scale, businesses are increasingly adopting solar panels. This reduces energy bills and contributes to a greener planet. The dirty secret is that many business turn off their rooftop solar because of the threat of fire and business interruption. OnSight’s OWL fixes this. ⚠️ Growth in Thermal Events: With the rapid expansion of solar farms, there has also been an uptick in "thermal events," or fires. These incidents destroy infrastructure and threaten nearby communities. 👷‍♂️ Labor Challenges: Like so many other industries, the solar industry is facing labor challenges. The availability and quality of skilled workers is crucial to maintaining and expanding solar infrastructure. Additionally, workers often have to operate in extremely hot environments, which can impact productivity and safety (hi, OSHA). Great timing - VPP's still picking up steam, and my simple buyback contract runs out next month so plan to change to VPP in October. One of those areas where Texas market and regulatory structure puts us way ahead. Did some simple digging today of the 3 known examples: Tesla, David Energy & Octopus, and looks like David Energy deal is likely a good fit. I do expect the afternoon-evening spreads will shrink substantially (due to all the batteries in play), but still makes a lot of sense to me to go this way. For project developers building everything from solar infrastructure to data centers, getting and staying compliant with the ever-changing world of tax credits, incentives, carbon market standards, and EPA regulations is confusing, opaque, and incredibly manual. Offstream utilizes LLMs to help those same project developers get and stay compliant via a simple software platform. Congratulations to Tom N. and his grid-tech startup, Piq Energy, on their inclusion in this great writeup from Russell S. and Virta Ventures on startups involved in planning + siting data centers - an enormous industry. A standout fact or two: -Power consumption for AI data centers is projected to 7x by 2030, per Goldman Sachs -The interconnection queue is currently ~5 years for renewables projects - we need rapid progress in grid planning if we don't want new data projects to add more fossil-powered electricity to the grid, reversing recent progress Piq has the potential to be a key tool in this fight, using AI to simulate the grid and complete interconnection (and other grid) analyses in hours that previously took weeks via manual consultant processes. It's great to see emerging major players in the space, like Cloverleaf Infrastructure (which just announced $300M in funding to build out renewables-powered data center campuses), choosing Piq to help them execute. Proud to be a longtime advisor to Piq and Tom (who paddleboarded to Alcatraz with me and John McDowell back in March!), and looking forward to seeing the impact Piq makes on global power buildout. Four years ago, in the thick of the COVID pandemic, Rewiring America shared their #electrification handbook. We at Energize Capital had been investing at the intersection of renewables and electrification since our firm's inception back in 2016. Rewiring America's work crystallized the electrification of everything imperative in a way we hadn't seen before; communicating complicated concepts simply. Corporate investments in climate-tech have consistently increased since 2005, even when other sources of investment declined. The startups they invest in are more likely to achieve a successful exit. Public grants are not significantly associated with exits on their own but are likely to act as catalysts for high-risk startups. Publicly funded startups exit at a higher rate with the addition of corporate investment (155% increase) compared with other private investment (78% increase). #climatetech #corporateVC #venturecapital

In other news, foxes think the henhouse doesn't need any guarding. The author's argument basically boils down to: 1) trust us and 2) merchant transmission development usually runs over budget or gets abandoned, resulting in higher costs to the customers. The first argument is categorically weak and problematic, but the second has some validity. There are a number of solutions to the second problem beyond right-of-first refusal, however, including higher security deposits (to prevent walking away) and various provisions that disallow cost escalation after bidding (or defined indexing provisions).
