According to recent polling, strengthening the U.S. economy is voters’ top policy priority in 2024. What a surprise then to see in the campaign, arguments against economic freedom such as the rejection of free enterprise and as well hostility to free trade. Both ideas leading to deficit-funded spending, more debt, more inflation and at the end more inequality. Whether you trust in anecdotal or empirical evidence, there is no better policy than economic freedom. From 2002 to 2022, nearly 1 billion people moved out of extreme poverty globally. The primary reason is economic freedom, with even totalitarian regimes embracing some form of economic liberalization. Hopefully, we will see in the future more data driven campaigns focusing on how to foster the virtuous circle of poverty reduction and less debates focus mainly on rethoric.

Unfortunately, as human beings, we are prone to behavioral tendencies and mental shortcuts that don’t always work in our favor. When we see or hear information—especially if it comes across as alarming—we may fixate on it in counterproductive ways. For instance, how information is presented can have a bigger impact on how we feel about it than the facts themselves. This framing bias is what convinces you to see a glass as half full or half empty. In this case, seeing a 1,000-point drop in a market index might lead you to panic and sell investments, or at least feel nervous about sitting tight. It might help your emotional and fiscal well-being to remember that “big” point drop is also a much smaller 2.6% decline. So, what’s an investor to do? First, recognize the role your emotions play in processing this kind of information. When you encounter what seems like a scary statistic, ask yourself whether it’s actually that scary. Is the stat giving you all the information you need? Is it presented out of context or hiding anything? Is it being used to sensationalize a story to snag your valuable attention? Who are you voting for President? Don't keep the winner from clouding your #investment judgment. Biden and Trump have secured enough delegates to become their parties' nominees, but the outcome of the 2024 #Presidentialelection remains murky. Regardless of who the next president is, since 1953, investing in the S&P 500 only during #Republican or #Democratic presidencies would have resulted in major shortfalls versus investing in the index regardless of the political party in power. I see so many people lamenting about President Trump's plans to end the Department of Education. Most of those people have not looked at where the money is going. The Federal Government only provides about 10-12% of funding for K-12 education. Where does most of the money go? Right into the pockets of colleges and universities. Imagine a world where the Federal Government did not subsidize the bloated and out of touch universities and instead invested in actually training our children and young adults for things that will help them in life (such as Career Technical Education). In our district there is a waiting list for CTE programs and a serious lack in options. Why? Because there are not enough funds to help. Say what you want about President Trump, but at least he is daring to take on the higher education cartel.

My thoughts are that the next two weeks will focus heavily on the US jobs report and the Fed’s decision on interest rates. With election season here, even these usually dry updates could force Kamala Harris & Donald Trump to tweak their messaging on what voters care about most: the economy! Stay tuned!
