Viasat unveiled a variety of ground-breaking enhancements to its satellite network and service model that will raise the bar for business aviation in-flight connectivity. Viasat Jet ConneX customers will be the first to benefit from major performance improvements on selected plans, with the introduction of features such as uncapped speeds, expanded capacity and increased network prioritization. Hundreds of existing customers are already trialing the enhancement program, titled JetXP, which has been developed following extensive consultation with customers, partners and research agencies, in addition to detailed analysis of usage trends over the past year. Plhak said he views this week at NBAA-BACE as a prime opportunity to connect with U.S. brokers and charter operators, who he feels are more open to trying new technology. (read the full article below) Almost no one in the sector denies that it takes far too long to book charter flights, with operators commonly complaining that their teams are drowning in quote requests from brokers and struggling to assess all the variables needed to generate accurate and profitable pricing. While several existing software providers and online marketplaces are already seeking to close this gap, Austria-based VOO is convinced that a lot more progress could be made and that a combination of cultural issues is blocking acceptance of breakthrough technology. According to Plhak, operators are wasting hours dealing with quote requests. At the same time, brokers often don’t have an efficient way to convey all aspects of their customers’ needs to potential service providers, which can result in glitches in how the service is provided and inaccurate pricing that either deters bookings or results in operators’ margins being excessively squeezed. VOO’s mission is to bridge the data gap between operators and brokers, securely exchanging information between flight operations systems and brokers' customer relationship management systems. “We’ve created a booking platform, but the bigger picture is that we have become a data distribution system,” Plhak said. The latest airline route news, featuring network changes, schedule alterations, codeshares and interline agreements. Nov. 8   Icelandic LCC Play reported a 10.5% year-over-year drop in passengers carried in October, as the carrier adjusts its network. The airline is increasing point-to-point service to leisure markets in Southern Europe while reducing its focus on connecting passengers through its Reykjavik Keflavik base to destinations in the U.S. and Canada, citing poor yields from its services connecting Europe and North America. The 10.5% drop in October passengers carried—to 138,155—“aligns with Play's strategy of gradually reducing its transatlantic capacity, which is reflected in the October traffic figures,” the airline said. Einar Örn Ólafsson, who took over as Play’s CEO in March, recently told Aviation Week that the carrier “will focus on the aspects of our business that have proven both successful and profitable—namely, transporting passengers between Southern Europe and Iceland.” Pakistani LCC Fly Jinnah will open service this month from Lahore, Pakistan, to three Saudi cities. From Nov. 16, flights will start between Lahore and Jeddah. The route will initially be flown 4X-weekly with an Airbus A320 before moving to a daily frequency starting Dec. 6. Also on Nov. 16, Fly Jinnah will launch 2X-weekly A320 flights between Lahore and Dammam, increasing to 3X-weekly service on Dec. 7. From Nov. 15, the carrier will kick off flights between Lahore and Riyadh. That route will be flown with an A320 2X-weekly initially, moving to 3X-weekly service on Dec. 6. Nov. 7   Air Canada unveiled a host of routes for the 2025 northern hemisphere summer season. New service to Europe will include 4X-weekly seasonal flights between Montreal-Trudeau International Airport (YUL) and Naples, Italy (May 16 to Oct. 12, 2025); 4X-weekly seasonal service between YUL and Porto, Portugal (June 5 to Sept. 20); 3X-weekly seasonal flights between Toronto Pearson International Airport (YYZ) and Prague (June 6 to Sept. 29); and 2X-weekly service between Ottawa and London Heathrow (Mar. 31 to Oct. 23). Air Canada will also open three new transborder routes. Daily service between YYZ and Jacksonville, Florida, will kick off May 22, 2025, to be operated year-round. Seasonal daily flights between YUL and Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport on the border of Ohio and Kentucky will operate from May 22 to Oct. 14, 2025. The airline will also fly between Vancouver and Nashville, Tennessee, 3X-weekly on a seasonal basis from May 1 to Oct. 24, 2025. AirBaltic and Lufthansa have expanded their codeshare agreement. The Latvian carrier will add its code to Lufthansa flights from Munich Airport (MUC) to German cities Bremen, Cologne Bonn, Dusseldorf, Hamburg, Hannover and Stuttgart. The two carriers started codesharing in 2020. Lufthansa already has its code on airBaltic flights from MUC to three cities: Riga, Latvia; Tallinn, Estonia; and Vilnius, Lithuania.

FAA awards nearly $1B for modernization efforts in 100+ airports. The funding aims to modernize aging terminals and ground transportation as U.S. airports face an estimated $151 billion in infrastructure needs through 2027. The Federal Aviation Administration is awarding $970 million for renovations and upgrades at 125 U.S. airports across 46 states as well as Guam and Palau. The funding targets projects that aim to modernize aging infrastructure, with many grants containing elements that will build new or expanded terminal facilities, ground transportation and sustainability elements, the U.S. Department of Transportation announced Thursday. These projects include adding passenger boarding bridges, renovating and adding existing passenger waiting areas and gates, reconstructing a baggage handling system and upgrades to HVAC and plumbing systems.  This round of funding is the fourth of five planned $1 billion annual investments under the bipartisan infrastructure law’s Airport Terminal Program, according to a news release. The bipartisan infrastructure law has provided $25 billion in total to modernize U.S. airport infrastructure, DOT said. Grants that target sustainability initiatives in airport terminals include $10 million to General Edward Lawrence Logan International Airport in Boston for a new energy-efficient air conditioning system in Terminal B; $9 million to Antonia B. Won Pat International Airport in Guam to install and integrate a renewable energy system, including solar photovoltaic panels, on the terminal roof; and $3 million to Columbia Metropolitan Airport in South Carolina for a solar PV array installation and BESS - battery energy storage system that can provide a resilient power source for the airport terminal, DOT said.
