However, difficulty in estimating an important thing doesn’t make the thing itself any less important. It does make the estimator’s job harder, though, and we should be honest about the potential for abuse (by administrations from both political parties) baked into the SCC framework. At the very least, the EPA should not be allowed to print its own regulatory currency by raising the SCC. Reducing Co2 emissions one bicycle at a time is a good start.  A bicycle commuter emits just 34 grams of Co2 per mile. Any other mode of commuting emits more Co2 per mile. 🇺🇸 💵 Breaking: U.S. Government backs high-quality voluntary carbon market 💵 🇺🇸 📣 This morning, key high-level public officials from the U.S. - including Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen, Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack, and Energy Secretary Jennifer Granholm - released an endorsement of the voluntary carbon market (#VCM) as a key vehicle to fight climate change. It came alongside a set of principles to strengthen this mechanism and preempt some of the issues the VCM has faced over the years. 💰 The stated purpose is to direct private capital towards effective decarbonization efforts through responsible participation in the VCM. The main announcement: 1️⃣ Encourges the private sector to participate in the VCM. 2️⃣ Considers that credits are complementary to emission reduction efforts. 3️⃣ Pushes for participation in the VCM to “help technologies for carbon removal become more cost-effective in the future and support greater purchase volumes of associated carbon removal credits.” It lays out so-called “Principles for Responsible Participation”, namely: ➡ Focus on High-Quality Credits ➡ Permanence ➡ Robust Monitoring, Reporting, Verification, and Validation (MMRV) ➡ Co-Benefits ➡ Emissions Reduction Priority 💪 Why is this important? This endorsement of the VCM by the largest economy in the world sends a strong signal that the VCM is here to stay. 🌎 The Voluntary Carbon Market (VCM) is essential in mitigating climate change, but its success depends heavily on the rigorous and honest methodologies used by participating organizations. Recently, Renoster conducted an evaluation of Open Forest Protocol's (OFP) methodology for afforestation, reforestation, and revegetation (ARR). Some welcome news and progressive climate leadership from the Biden-Harris Administration. The Administration’s new Principles for Responsible Participation in the Voluntary Carbon Market state the obvious, but pave the way for demand that has been sat on the sidelines to now step in and step up. At emstream and emsurge have been working tirelessly on principles 6 & 7, contributing to efforts that improve market integrity and facilitating efficient market participation and succeeding in lowering transaction costs. While you’ve been busy with carbon, net zero and nature transition risk taking your #TNFD LEAP assessment, staying in compliance with #CSRD and preparing for #EUDR; nature’s physical supply chain risk is already here! and it’s going to wreak havoc on entire sectors, companies and markets. Not in 2050, but between now and 2030, we are going to see a massive value destruction of up to 30% drop in NPV (source: Vivid Economics) from food supply disruptions, soil degradation, zoonotic diseases, anti microbial resistance and other nature related risks. If the private sector doesn’t wake up and invests trillions of dollars in regenerating our water, soil, biodiversity and ecosystems, it is going to be too late.. Insurance companies and re-insurers are best positioned to fund, research and mitigate nature risks but instead of keep asking ‘Who is paying’ (the premiums), they should start asking (and paying) to understand ‘Who is at risk’ and for how much, then start building parametric insurance products with the private sector to mitigate nature risk. #naturefinance #naturerisk #natureinsurance #naturecantwait

Gearing up for another "taster" offering of Energy System Science and Practice, and also surfacing more data that align with the 10 metrics of "regenerative" health from a "flow network" perspective. Ensuring there are robust #flows of crucial resources (energy) to and through the collective body is foundational to regenerative #health. Here is evidence that we are NOT where we should be economically (and socially) in this respect: "Losing a job can be devastating for anyone, regardless of income level. But it can be especially turbulent for those already living paycheck to paycheck or without alternative sources of income. "Much of the displaced low-wage workforce was in an economically precarious position before the #pandemic. They earned average hourly wages of only $10.40 per hour, less than a third of the average hourly wage of the displaced mid/high-wage workforce ($33.80 per hour), and equal to only $22,000 annually if working full time. Some displaced low-wage workers may have been able to fall back on the income of other family members, but even before pandemic-induced job losses, about two in five were living below 200% of the poverty line, suggesting lean finances to begin with. "By contrast, only 7% of mid/high-wage workers lived below the 200% of the poverty line. (200% of the federal poverty level is equivalent to about $40,000 per year for a family of three in 2018 dollars.) More than one in four low-wage workers were receiving safety net benefits such as food assistance or Medicaid. "The demographic characteristics of the displaced low- and mid/high-wage workforce also reflect the fault lines in our #economy. The displaced low-wage workforce is far younger, more racially and ethnically diverse, and have completed less formal education than the displaced mid/high-wage workforce." "There could be clear risks to corporate use of carbon credits for the purposes of offsetting. This includes potential unintended effects of hindering the net-zero transformation and/or reducing climate finance."
