The secret to successful AI implementations? Worker voice When stakeholders become more involved in generative AI design and implementation, it’s more likely that such tools will augment work rather than displace workers. As organizations begin to understand the capabilities and effects of generative artificial intelligence, a group of MIT experts hopes a new framework for technology design and implementation will inspire leaders to include worker voice in their decision-making. In a new paper, “Bringing Worker Voice Into Generative AI,” the researchers explain that generative AI is “well-suited to bottom-up development and use.” They also contend that the more that stakeholders are involved in defining the problems and opportunities the technology can address, “the more likely it is that these tools will be used to augment how workers do their jobs rather than displace them.” The paper was written by Thomas A. Kochan, Ben Armstrong, Julie Shah, Emilio J. Castilla, Ben Likis, and Martha E. Mangelsdorf, all of MIT. It draws on more than 50 interviews with academics, business managers, AI experts, and labor leaders and is also guided by the researchers’ earlier work. “I know from prior work that I’ve done in automation and robotics, the most successful applications of automation were those where the engineers were working side by side with those on the shop floor or those with the domain expertise,” said Shah, professor and department head at the MIT Department of Aeronautics and Astronautics, in an interview. “The opportunity here is to follow that same playbook so that generative AI can have the positive outcomes that we hope it will have.” Here’s a closer look at the four stages of technology design and implementation where leaders should solicit input from their workers. https://lnkd.in/dPdYanTW By Meredith Somers

🌟 The #AI #Trust Paradox: Navigating the Perils and Promise of Our AI-Powered Future 💫 Following last weekend sessions at Bayes Business School with Gianvito Lanzolla and Matteo Devigili. I decided to do some research today on the "bad" side of AI. As I was reviewing articles, I discovered this piece of research on Harvard Business Review. So think about this... It is clear humanity stands at the precipice of an AI revolution. The promise is certainly tantalizing: a world where artificial intelligence can solve our greatest challenges, from curing diseases to identifying early cancer and mitigating the risk of climate change. Yet, as the capabilities of AI surged forward at breakneck speed, a chasm of distrust threatened to engulf its potential. Bhaskar Chakravorti's insightful in his article "AI's Trust Problem" illuminates the twelve horsemen of the AI apocalypse: 📍 Disinformation eroding the very fabric of truth 📍 Gaping vulnerabilities in safety and security 📍 The impenetrable "black box" of AI decision-making 📍 Ethical quandaries that keep us up at night 📍 Algorithmic bias amplifying societal inequities 📍 Erratic behaviors that defy human logic 📍 Hallucinations in large language models blurring reality 📍 Unknown risks lurking in the shadows 📍 Job displacement widening the inequality divide 📍 The environmental toll of compute-intensive AI 📍 Centralization of power in the hands of Big Tech giants 📍 Reactive government regulation stifling innovation Like many of you I am fascinated by the transformative potential of AI. Still, I fell that we stand at a critical juncture. If we allow the trust deficit to grow unchecked, we risk squandering one of the greatest opportunities in human history. Yet, amidst this fast approaching storm clouds, there is a path forward. The key lies in placing humans at the center of AI's evolution and doubling down on #responsibleAI practices, empowering diverse voices - from ethicists to social scientists to everyday citizens - to help chart a course forward. By investing in #humancentered design, lifelong upskilling, and proactive governance frameworks, we can also begin to bridge the trust gap. The road ahead won't be easy though. Building trust in AI will require unwavering commitment, difficult trade-offs, and a willingness to confront hard truths head-on. But if we can summon the collective wisdom and courage to the masses to tackle these challenges, we can potentially push forward to progress toward an era of AI-powered innovation that uplifts humanity as a whole.
