Coming from the world of COBOL, JCL, and DB2 queries, I used to wonder: "What really happens on the frontend side of an application?" Now, as I work on digital banking projects involving web and mobile applications, I’ve had the chance to connect these two vastly different architectures—and it’s fascinating! # How These Worlds Connect When building a banking application, here's how these layers interact:   - Frontend (Web or Mobile): This is what the user interacts with—buttons, forms, dashboards. Technologies like Angular, React, or Swift provide the polished UI. - Middle Layer (Microservices): The bridge between frontend and backend. Microservices built in Java, Python, or Kotlin ensure scalability and modularity, communicating between layers via REST APIs or GraphQL. - Backend (Mainframes): The powerhouse. Often a mainframe system like COBOL retrieves transactional data stored in DB2 databases, ensuring reliability and security for banking operations. For example, when a user logs in to their banking app, the request flows from the frontend, gets validated and processed by microservices, and finally pulls account details from the mainframe host. # Tools & Technology Stack for Integration - API Gateways: Tools like Kong or Apigee to expose backend services to the frontend securely.   - Middleware: Kafka or RabbitMQ to handle asynchronous messaging between microservices and mainframes.   - Adapters: Specialized connectors (like CICS Adapters) to enable microservices to access legacy systems seamlessly.  # Challenges and Solutions 1. Latency Between Layers: Mainframes, known for batch processing, may not always be optimized for real-time responses.     - Solution: Caching responses with Redis or implementing asynchronous calls.    2. Data Formatting: Mainframes use EBCDIC, while modern systems use ASCII, causing encoding issues.     - Solution: Middleware like DataPower ensures proper translation. 3. Coordination Across Teams: Aligning frontend, microservices, and backend development timelines.     - Solution: Strong project management and dependency tracking using tools like JIRA. 4. Scalability: Legacy systems often need modernization to handle increased traffic.     - Solution: Incremental migration of certain processes to microservices. Managing these layers together is not just about technology; it’s about collaboration. Developers, architects, and project managers must work cohesively to deliver a reliable and high-performing application. Are you from mainframes background? Excellent perspective on the journey Mainframe clients have been on for the last 40 years. This speaks to banking industry but equally applies to client's in most industries. Hard to imagine how a bank ran its internal business prior to mainframe's showing up. Automating more and more of their business processes using these new mainframe technologies offered significant benefits and competititive differentiation. A key thread in this journey is that businesses and product suppliers learned how to integrate with each new wave of technology (ie. PC, Mid-Range, Web, Cloud, AI, Quantum).
