You'd be surprised by the awful advice I hear from some "SEO agencies." This client was on a sudden and steady decline in 2024 and their agency couldn't figure it out, so the business came to me in a panic. They were discussing layoffs for the first time in their 20-year history. The cause? Earlier this year the agency recommended the client switch their Google listing to an SAB because they are a home service 😐 (Despite having a verified location with signage...) At least that's an easy fix. 24 hours later and rankings were back to normal 🙌 Be very careful who you trust for SEO advice. At this point, nearly every SEO expert in the industry has commented on the massive Google documentation leak. While I can't add much to that discussion, I want to acknowledge those who embrace the "rising tides lift all boats" mentality. In an industry where proprietary knowledge is guarded, SEO professionals who freely share valuable strategies and tactics, even with competitors, significantly benefit the entire field. 🚨 Two weeks ago, Google came out with a major core algorithm update. I get messages every few days... "My site" or "My client's site" is tanking. What do I do?!" And guess what I almost always see when I look at their site? Two things: 1 - Poor website structure Easy things they could fix, like how fast the site is, better design, improved call-to-action. 2 - Poor content AI is great for some things. It's trash for others. And it's made some lazy marketers lazier. Lazy AI content = poor content. Poor content = poor rankings. In 17 years running SEO National, I've never had a client get a penalty after any algorithm update. After algorithm updates, most clients are neutral or up. Just look at the attached screenshot... Lifts all the way up to +11.2%. Why? Because sticking to the fundamentals pays off. ✅ Good structure ✅ Good content Quit getting distracted. Quit chasing shiny objects, and the latest trends. Sure, you might get a head start. But do you want to have the fastest 100 meters in a marathon, or do you want to win at the finish line?

One of the most common questions I get after we've had an SEO engagement for under a year is why traffic isn't higher.* Here's the irony. In every case, leads are up. More importantly, quality leads are up. On average, up 60-100% YOY. But the traffic number is still a sticking point every time. 🔈 Often when we take over an account, we find that the prior strategy WAS driven by traffic volume, driving a lot of unqualified traffic AND leads. This simply wastes sales' time and adds no value. (My favorite example is when a page on dialysis was added to a call center website- shocking, but no, they did not offer dialysis!) 🎯 So when we come in, we clean up the content and keyword strategy to focus on relevant, quality content that is most relevant to the audience. The initial result is regularly flat traffic, sometimes a little less, with higher lead volume. Over time, as that strategy continues building on itself, traffic continues to increase. But initially, that's not the case. Because it's not our goal. Here's how we measure our SEO results: 📈 did conversion rates improve from organic? 📊 are leads and QUALITY leads up from organic? (we exclude spam/junk, job seekers, vendors, etc. from both categories- no using GA4, friends! gotta be the CRM) ↘ are junk leads decreasing? 📤 are we creating content the team wants to share out on other channels? SEO is changing, and getting content out that Sales and others can share with leads and clients is critical. 🚗 over time, is organic traffic steadily increasing YOY? (again, this usually starts around 12 mos) How are you measuring your SEO results? *Things shift after a year typically, and the traffic starts to steadily increase as well. #seo #organicsearch #marketinganalytics

If you’re stuck in 2015 SEO tactics, you’re missing the real game. AI is smarter than ever, and it's time to write for humans, not search engines. In a nutshell, AI helps Google understand what people really mean when they search (a.k.a search intent), delivering more relevant and personalized results. With traditional SEO tactics—focused heavily on keywords, backlinks, and other ranking signals—becoming less effective, it becomes increasingly important to shift your focus to understanding how real people search for information and why. Gone are the days when you could stuff your content with keywords and hope for the best. AI is making search engines smarter, and improvements are delivered faster than ever before. But no matter what’s going on with the algos, bots, and machines, quality content still wins. My advice: stress less and don’t overthink it. Forget the algorithm paranoia. Y/Y branded search volume is generally down. All digital marketing roads eventually lead to someone searching for your brand. Branded search volume is an excellent indicator on how your digital marketing footprint is resonating. If that search volume is going down not up, it will have long term narcon effects. I pulled reports against 18 B2B SaaS companies. Only three of them had branded search volume increase year over year. Why? One interesting metric was their keyword volume significantly went up while most of the other companies went down. what is brand name brand name + product brand name vs competitor brand name + pricing brand name + demo One enterprise size B2B SaaS company went from less than 50,000 keywords last year to over 100k+ by October 2024, and its search volume and traffic grew by 18%. As you head into 2025 planning, consider diversifying your branded keywords to move people through the funnel–Information > Navigational > Commercial > Transactional. All digital marketing roads will lead to branded search terms, and how else can we thoughtfully engage with them once they get there? Ecommerce SEO Tip: Your review platform MUST let users upload rich media. Google recommends reviews include "evidence such as visuals, audio..." A common mistake I see on ecommerce websites is that they only allow-text only reviews. This is a huge missed opportunity. Reviews are a perfect way to source and scale user generated content. Allowing for text-only reviews limits the ability for your users to generate rich media on your behalf. By choosing a review platform that allows for rich media to be uploaded, you're scaling the information gain your product pages are able to have. Since reviews will be unique your site, you'll have images, videos and visuals that no other ecommerce site will have. Especially if you're finding that competitors use text-only reviews, this could be a huge advantage. In this example, I can see Lulus (an ecommerce site with incredible SEO) allows users to upload images of their products directly in their reviews. At the top each product page, they also aggregator a carousel of all the user generated images given for an individual product. This one consideration can help you improve the quality of your user generated content.
