Preliminary results from an observational, self-controlled retrospective cohort study by Management Science Associates (MSA) using point-of-sale data linked to electronic health records of 186 patients with chronic pain from 2021 to 2024 indicates a 53% reduction in opioid prescriptions after initiating cannabis use. The study presentation, tabled at a Medical Cannabis Policy Advisory Board meeting last month states 84.4% of patients reduced opioid use after starting cannabis. Most patients who reduced opioid use were 36 – 65 years old. Among the group that experienced reduction in opioid use, 56% were females and 43% were males. Interestingly, while the greatest reduction was seen in neuropathic pain (73.5%), patients with chronic headache/orofacial pain showed an increase in opioid use. Patients achieving reductions mostly commonly used vapes (67.6%), gummies (53.3%) and tinctures (19.0%). https://lnkd.in/gwP5sZCn

Artificial dyes in food: California’s push for safer ingredients 🌈 Artificial dyes have long been used to brighten foods, but research now links them to potential health risks, especially for children. Robert F. Kennedy Jr. has already addressed this issue, as he talked about his actions in banning them if appointed to a position in Trump’s administration. California is taking a stand, recently passing a law to phase out several dyes, including Red 3, from children’s foods in schools and banning it from all food statewide by 2027. 📢 The NUKA System of Care in Alaska I recently came across Ben Allen's post about what the UK can learn from the primary healthcare system in Alaska. Canada, like the UK, faces numerous challenges, making it crucial to learn from evidence-based examples. The Nuka System of Care in Alaska, renowned for its relationship-based, customer-owned care, has achieved significant success with a 44% reduction in A&E waits, 97% patient satisfaction, and 95% staff satisfaction. Key to Nuka's success are its integrated care teams, emphasis on community engagement, and focus on holistic, patient-centred care. Canada is drawing inspiration from Nuka, investing in projects like TeamPrimaryCare.ca and OurCare.ca, but more government action is needed to implement these models and leverage the full potential of a multidisciplinary primary care team. The prestigious National Academies of Science, Engineering and Medicine (NASEM) has released a new Report "Cannabis: Policy Impacts Public Health and Health Equity (2024)". This report follows on the 2017 landmark NASEM report on the health effects of cannabis and fills an important leadership vacuum in outlining key steps for a reducing the harm of the current approach to cannabis and hemp legalization. Key policies identified as most likely to have a public health impact include: The use of state monopolies Restrictions and requirements for retail operations Pricing measures such as prohibiting discounting Restrictions on cannabis impaired driving (while recognizing challenges of current measurement methods) Tax strategies including by Delta-9-THC concentrations Restrictions on physical retail availability including number and type of outlets allowed, on site consumption, proximity to schools, hours, and days of sale Measures to limit youth access such as enforcement mechanisms widely used for tobacco and alcohol to assure licensees do not sell to minors Stronger product design restrictions and requirements The report also has discussions on marketing, cultivation and other areas. A special kudos to NASEM for calling on Congress to put hemp with THC and look-alikes back on Controlled Substances Act and for the CDC and the National Governor's Association to prioritize public health by creating model laws and best practices for safer, more equitable cannabis policy. We're especially pleased that the recommendations correlate closely with those that this project has been making and included in our model laws and principles for cannabis regulation based on review of the evidence.
