Team San Diego! I though you may find this as surprising as I did...we are not alone. Read this quick article from Jon Prentice's (Silicon Valley Bank) interview with with James Newell (Voyager Capital), published in GeekWire on Seattle's innovation ecosystem....they lament the SAME issues as we do in San Diego: * Lack of angel investors, (Especially, it calls out, given the local giant tech co's) * "We need low-conviction check writers." * Lack of "cachet associated with being an angel investor" - We have similar efforts (as described in the article) to drum up angel activity: NuFund Venture Group and, Interlock Capital (read the article and you'll see why the Interlock effort is tops as relates to "paying back into the ecosystem") Connect.org strives to 'connect' innovative companies with investors of all types (angel, VC, PE...) - just see "Innovation Day". In the TED Conferences "How giant websites design for you", Margaret Gould Stewart, Facebook's VP of Product Design discusses the design of digital experiences, especially design of system so massive that it's difficult to comprehend. An example like the Facebook "like" and "share" buttons, which are seen a staggering 22 billion times daily, making them some of the most-viewed design elements. Margaret shares her top 3 rules for designing at scale: 1) Attention to details, tiny changes can make huge impact 2) Be cognizant and understand how to design with data and 3) Introduce changes very carefully. Sofeast CEO Renaud Anjoran discusses the DfX principle of 'Design for Short Product Development' or 'Short Time to Market' with Andrew Amirnovin, MBA, BSEE, CRE. When designing for shorter development times to get to market faster, simplifying the product is key. Simpler products are faster and cheaper to develop and validate. However, be warned, this is NOT the same as skipping steps, such as not doing a pilot run. Is your research practice IPO-ready? It might seem like overkill, especially if you're at an early-stage startup. Why spend time and resources on something that might never happen? UXR Leader Brad Orego (they/them) offers two reasons: 1. You never know when an acquisition by a public company might happen. 2. Being IPO-ready is mostly just following best practices for great research.
