A summary of the study: This study examines the association between earmarking bequeathable assets and retirement satisfaction. Utilizing longitudinal data from the Health and Retirement Study, the authors examine the retirement satisfaction of retirees who have intentionally earmarked their bequeathable assets compared to retirees who have not. Philip Guo (UC San Diego) has created this tool called Python Tutor to automatically visualize what code does, especially in introductory CS classes (CS0, CS1, CS2) where problems are self-contained. It works not only for Python but also for Java, C, or C++. In this episode of The CS-Ed Podcast, Philip provides good examples of how to use it (for both students to self-debug and teachers to illustrate examples), explains concrete use cases (low-level things, recursion, memory management), discusses the cross-language aspect, comments on what the tool cannot do (scope), and explains the approach of the PythonTutor AI assistant that teaches in a more formative way. Within my School, we offer graduate courses that focus on developing a project with one or more students. These courses, termed "special problems" in Engineering Management or Systems Engineering, function as capstone projects, where students apply their accumulated knowledge to a specific problem. The outcome is tipically a whitepaper, sometimes a conference or journal paper. Last semester, I worked with one of my students - Priyanka Marwaha - on using Large Language models in analyzing compliance to policies, such as GDPR. Policy compliance is a crucial aspect of our economy, encompassing legal, financial, operational and ethical aspects: the global governance, risk management and compliance (GRC) market was valued at approximately $35 billion in 2021 and is projected to reach $64 billion by 2027. #LLM #compliance

🚀 Bringing Data to Life for Our Students 🎯 Hey everyone, I’m excited to share a new tool I’ve been working on for our students! If you’re like me and need to see things to get them, this is for you. I’ve always found it hard to learn complex stuff without being able to move things around and see how it all fits together. This new app lets students visually map out data normalization. They can load Excel files, click and drag fields, set primary keys, and get a hands-on feel for how it all works. It’s like how we learned as kids—touching, feeling, and interacting with the world around us. And that’s not all! I also have a Language Model Visualizer that lets students see how ChatGPT shuffles the deck, visually showing the magic behind the scenes. My students will be the first to use these tools this fall, and after getting their feedback, I plan to share it with more folks. NEW REPORT: Learn about Minority-Serving Institutions (MSIs) across the U.S. and U.S. Territories in our new white paper. MSIs enroll significant percentages of racially minoritized undergraduate students. ➡️Data from the MSI Data Project show there are 43 states and 9 territories with at least one MSI, with California and Texas each having at least 100. ➡️Between 2017 and 2021, 28 states and 2 territories were home to an increasing number of MSIs. ➡️Hispanic-serving institutions (HSIs) are the most represented of the 11 MSIs, found mostly in the Pacific and West South Central U.S. divisions. Ivy Tech Executives Master Training to Embed Simplexity Min Basadur and Tim Basadur traveled to Indianapolis to train the leaders of Ivy Tech on how to engage their employees and teams to solve their own work problems. The backbone of the Simplexity System is the Innovative Results Equation: Innovative results require  The right content (knowledge)  A process of working together innovatively Process skills (diverging, converging, and deferral of judgment within and between each process step)  Process tools (such as the “Why What’s Stopping?” Analysis and Challenge Mapping) Profile styles (Generator, Conceptualizer, Optimizer, Implementer) for breakthrough thinking The team learned how to engage participants in experiential learning (being a “guide on the side” rather than the “sage on the stage”). By guiding their own team through all 8 steps of the Simplexity process they had a terrific solution ready to implement. The feeling in the room was electric. Everything came together for the team. They had achieved the confidence they were seeking to train others and were truly excited to solve their own problem. It worked! They collaborated as a team and earned the following individual awards: Best Judgment Deferrer, Best Facilitator, The Golden Egg Award, The Sparkplug Award, The Why/What’s Stopping Award, The Survivor of the Hurricane, and Most Valuable Player. Now ask them how they are teaching monetary policy! The reality of teaching Econ 101 to non-majors is extremely challenging. Surveying an entire discipline in 16 weeks is challenging. We are so excited to announce that our Innovation and Technology Cabinet is partnering with the Boston Public Schools to adapt data science curriculum to use Open Data. We know that data science and AI will lead to great career opportunities, but the gaps in representation for women, Latin, black, and other groups in these jobs will excacervate wealth gaps. We believe that if students have access to learn how to answer questions about their neighborhoods and their communities, that studying data science and AI will be much more relevant. We know human knowledge and experience is essential to good analytics: it’s how we know if we have an over fit model, if the answers make sense. And the wisdom that our BPS students can only be made even more powerful with the language and tools of Data Science. We know we are obsessed about answering interesting questions about our City that matter. This is a great article from Marc Watkins on dealing with #AI in #HigherEd. "...at the end of the day, our students in higher education are adults and they’re going to have to come to terms with using or avoiding using generative AI in their private lives and their work. We have an opportunity here to shape that. " I completely agree that rather than simply banning, embracing, or ignoring AI, we should be thinking about supporting students to develop healthy and appropriate attitudes around the use of AI, just as we do with other tools. My own approach has been to open an ongoing discussion with students about the merits and pitfalls of AI, and request an honest declaration of if and how students have used AI, and how it benefited their learning. If they can explain to me how their use of AI has helped them to achieve learning outcomes, without becoming a substitute for their own learning and development, then how can I see that as a bad thing? #HigherEducadtion #GenAI #Learning
