I had the pleasure of attending an insightful session at MIT Sloan School of Management by Professor Zeynep Ton on her groundbreaking ‘Good Jobs Strategy’. For higher profits this approach emphasizes investing in employees through better wages, cross training, supportive work environments, and meaningful job design that upholds dignity. She shared how Costco and some other successful companies are crushing it with this strategy. Having been in Corporate Learning and Development for 20+ years I thought about how can learning leaders and HR leaders bring this to life. ✅By implementing robust L&D programs focused on continuous skill development, clear career pathways, and a culture of continuous improvement, we can design jobs that provide meaning and dignity. ✅Aligning employee growth with organizational goals can foster a motivated, loyal, and highly skilled workforce, driving both operational excellence and long-term business success. There is a crucial role play but there are challenges to overcome in my view 🛑Balancing Short-Term and Long-Term Goals: Aligning immediate business needs with long-term employee growth and development can be complex. I have fought these battles in my career and lost to short sighted decisions at the top. 🛑Job Design Complexity: Creating roles that provide meaning and dignity while ensuring operational efficiency demands careful planning and constant refinement. 🛑Change Management: Transforming organizational culture to prioritize continuous improvement and employee development requires time, commitment, and buy-in from all levels of the organization. Strong commitment for change definitely needs to come from the top in my view. With commitment from leadership and a focus on creating meaningful, dignified jobs, companies can embark on a journey towards sustained success and societal impact. In his book, “Road to Flourishing,” Al Lopus argues “that workplace culture determines employee engagement, and employee engagement determines organizational success” (7). His book then explores “Eight Keys to a Transformed Culture.” The Eight Keys are: Fantastic Teams, Life-Giving Work, Outstanding Talent, Uplifting Growth, Rewarding Compensation, Inspirational Leadership, Sustainable Strategy, and Healthy Communication. In Chapter 1, Lopus defines #culture as “‘how we do things around here.’ It comprises the shared beliefs and values of a group, expressed in priorities, decisions, and above all behaviors” (19). Statistical analysis of extensive data gathered by his consulting firm reveals that the eight elements identified above “account for over 80 percent of what engages employees at work” (24) Chapter 2: Fantastic #Teams “Flourishing cultures nourish cohesive teams that effectively engage in passionate, open debate. Because they function so well together, these teams accomplish more than what any one individual can do on their own” (23). Lopus identifies the following characteristics of fantastic teams: they communicate well, get things done, share credit for success, love being together, bring their whole selves to work, are inclusive and diverse, work through challenges with each other by facing and resolving conflict, and trust each other (31). Chapter 3: Life-Giving #Work “Flourishing cultures engage people in work that is full of meaning, significance, and purpose. Staff members are devoted to their role and can utilize their skills and spiritual gifts in what they do” (24). Here are some of the characteristics of life-giving work: it fits people’s gifts, it tells people what to expect (clarity of vision and goals), it gives people the authority to succeed, it is fun, and it embraces the whole person (55-61). Lopus suggests three ways that leaders can help employees find joy in their work. First, they must lead by example by being a life-giving person themselves. Second, they must keep people close to the results, i.e., make sure that all employees are connected to the valuable work being done on the front lines of the organization. Third, the organization needs a robust theology of work. For the rest of my reflection on the book, see upcoming posts over the next few weeks.

Did you know that PMI is also the world’s leading accrediting body for higher education programs in project, program, and portfolio management ? Among the relatively lesser-known things that PMI does to contribute to project success is our work with academic institutions to provide PMI global accreditation to degree-granting higher education programs in project management. As of June 2024, there are 178 PMI-accredited degree-granting programs in project management worldwide. This important initiative, which contributes to providing robust knowledge to future generations of project professionals, is managed by the PMI Global Accreditation Center. Our dedicated team is led by Rebecca Lippert, EdD, PMP, and involves a growing number of volunteers. Besides the program's steady growth, it is becoming increasingly global. In 2024, half of the accredited programs are non US-based. The slides below provide more details.
